Wife and I are flying to FLA Monday morning to meet friends for a golf trip.

Got a call from a long time friend of mine (went to HS together, we play golf together every Wednesday afternoon) who is a PM for a mid-large resi builder. They have an electrical company they use pretty religiously but they’re unable to tackle all of their work. The primary electric co. they use is able to do what’s currently contracted but they have quite a bit coming up and a project next week that needs to be roughed. (4 bedroom 3 bath 3 car garage 3200sq ft home)

This project is supposed to be an “in” with them and his bosses. My friend pat has been trying to get me into some of their larger projects. And I’ve been after them for at least a year or so. I asked what happened that they had no backup and was told a second smaller electrical company they use sometimes was contracted already but there was a falling out between the much older absentee owner and the PM currently running it and they don’t want to deal with that mess of a company anymore.

So, Skip the vaca and work on the business or take the week off and hope the bid invitations are still there?

If this was just another GC I wouldn’t even consider it but this scenario is a little different considering a close relationship with people well established there. They do 20mm a year and their current go-to electrical company doesn’t want to grow any larger than they are now. I want to grow, badly, My father owns an electrical firm and is willing to loan me capitol and labor if these projects require more than my current resources allow.

Skip the vacation. Especially if it’ll make you more money in the long run.

If it’ll build a relationship for more money for bigger and better vacations in the future I’d do the job

That kind of what I’m thinking. If it was the rough in on one new house nah, but it’s really the fact I’m getting my company’s foot in the door by bailing them out of a jam on short notice.

Id skip the vacation. This could be one of the “what if?” Moments you look back on in 20 years and think what could have been if you chose the job over the vacation.

I would discuss it with your wife and explain the situation. I would post-pone the vacation and take the chance at the opportunity presenting itself to you. Look at everything that has fallen through to bring you to this point.

Best of luck man!

But if you had an opportunity to secure employment and make more money before the vacation ever happened, would she still be pissed?

I’d go on the vacation.

Retired individuals look back and often wish they had worked less. I never heard someone say ‘i wish i took less vacation’

Money’s not hard to make. Time off work though....
I kinda agree man. Life is too damn short. If I plan a vacation I try to stick to it. American's tend to work longer compared to any other country. Kinda sucks.

really depends on how bad you NEED the money. And the amount of money we are talking about lol . Also depends on how often you take vacation.

True. Everyone has a valid point. If I was single and had a project car or was wanting the 2020 Gt500 I’d take the job. If I was married I’d probably take the vacation.
