I’m under the impression that my Mustang will drive until I shut it off once it’s been started with the fob inside. Hmmm, now I’m curious (why I don’t know).

this is pretty much how it works. car will drive until you shut it off then won't start. which thieves know and probably use it to their advantage

I know a couple who have twice now driven 2 hours to Disney, and then learned they didn't have their car keys. No clue who had to bring them their keys.

Before anyone asks "how" I can only guess, but they have two little ones, mom remote started the SUV to cool it down, set the keys down/in her purse which she leaves as home as she doesn't want to lug it around the theme parks, they load up the kids, dad gets in, drives, and no one knows the lack of keys until 2 hours later.

Ours won’t let you put it in drive without keys, so that’s very strange. One of them probably had a key somewhere and didn’t realize it.

It's 100% going to depend on the car, and how old it is. I know said this once before and got a couple quick comments of "you get a beep and a message saying "no key detected." Ok, maybe for a new mustang, but a 7 year old Chevy or Kia could be different. I don't know what they have, I just know their story, a 2 hour drive to Disney, twice, without keys. If you google "how far can you drive without your key fob" there's quickly several stories about 5-10 years old of people heading on a road trip and finding out they forgot their keys, when they stop for gas the first time. Maybe that's why a brand new car beeps at you.

Yeah, you need the key to take over control and drive away, but if it’s after that (say it’s already running and you go inside a gas station, leave the keys behind by accident and get back in and take off) it will keep running.

This. Secure idle FTW.

Soon as the key is a certain distance away, you can't do shit with the truck, even if it's already running.

I have a 2012 Toyota and it will run and drive fine without the key until you shut it off. There's 3 beeps when you close the door while it's running without the keys inside and the dash flashes a big warning the entire time but functionality is not affected. I bought a couple 2018 Hondas last year but haven't tested what happens without the key fob.

Ours will let you continue driving. If you turn it off, it will warn you that you only have so long to restart without the key.

2017 GT350, I walk more than 5 feet away with fob in pocket it beeps twice. Never tried to drive it without the fob, I always figured it would shut off or something seeing it beeps as soon as the fob isn't inside.

I had a customer who's wife thought she would be nice and start his Suburban for him. (not via remote start). She left it in her pocket and went back in the house. He was headed on a trip and finally shut the vehicle off when he was ~600 miles away from home. He had to have the vehicle towed to a dealer and have a new keyfob programmed. Tow bill+new key =

Secure idle is something you can turn on in forescan for just about any modern ford now.

If my truck wasnt the blade key I would turn it on for my 2018.
