Looking to get my dad a new lawn mower. Preferably self propelled and gas powered. I offered to just do it myself or pay to have it done but he enjoys it still so I want to make it easier for him.

Let me know what y’all got! Thanks

Honda hrx. Starts easy, adjustable self propelled speed control, independent blade control--which means you can leave it running and have the blades stopped to empty the bag or self propel the mower back to it's storage spot without the blades engaged. HRR is also good.

I have an HRX217VKA and it's awesome. It's the entry HRX that doesn't have the blade stop. I considered it, but viewed it as something else to wear out over time. My only complaint vs the Toro it replaced is the bag opening is too large for a paper bag. So I bought one of those chute bag liners ($10) and it does the job great.

I bought mine from here a year or two ago and it was free shipping and no taxes at the time. Also got an extra year warranty. Honda HRX217VKA 21-Inch 200cc Select Drive™ Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

Just got a Honda ( HRX217K6VKA ), 5 year warranty.
GCV200 motor is just about bullet proof.
Consumer Reports rated the K5VKA # 2 on it's list of top picks in self propelled..

IMHO, buy the simplest mower you like with the least amount of crap on it.
This Briggs&Stratton 6.5 horse powered mower is 17+ years old.
If I remember correctly, it's on the 3rd set of rear and 2nd set of front tires.
It's the maintenance, maintenance, maintenance that will get you results like this.
Change oil, plug, air filter at least once, twice a year.
I also spray it off with water after every use. Stops a lot of the corrosion...

Honda powered mowers are way, way overpriced.

BTW: The bracket on the lower part of the handle is for a Toro Lawn Striper. I filled mine part way with silica sand.

Besides, the extra weight gives my fat ass some extra exercise when I mow and it makes the yard look kinda cool:

There's also a bunch of vids on how to make your own striper...

Good luck!

First ask him if he wants self propelled, some people are set in their ways.

If he does, get the Honda, so every time he uses it, he will know his son bought him the best.

If he doesn’t, see above. My detail push mower is a POS $150 mower with a B&S motor that I bought ten years ago. I have replaced the carb twice (Amazon $20 replacement), the blade once when I decided to get too close to a metal inspection port and one wheel adjuster that snapped off. I have never changed the oil and it just won’t die, making it one of my favorite tools.

+1 on Honda. I worked with the guys over at HPE last year and I was extremely impressed with the quality of everything they do. Plus, most of that equipment is made in the US.

I got this one as well because of the mower thread a couple of years ago. One pull start and so easy to use a 10yo can use it.

I have the Honda HRX217VYA and love it. 1 pull start every time and variable speed you can push it yourself or run behind it, user preference. Cuts great and super reliable

I am still using my 1985 Snapper LT16 lawn tractor. I have heard they last a long time. I hope so I dont want to buy a new mower again so soon.

Thanks for all the input guys! I’ll most likely go Honda. I know he likes the self propelled option and he prefers gas over electric, don’t think I could talk him into electric lol.

I bought a honda powered push mower 2 years ago. when it sits for a few days the cylinder fills up with oil and I have to take out the spark plug to drain it. replace the plug with a new one and then wait for it to happen again. makes a mess out of the air filter also. and the crankcase is filled to the correct level.
Gotta love that Honda. my snapper is 34 years old. I mow with it every week.

OP, out of curiosity, how old is your dad? We are having an issue with my mom (she is 79). We don't want her mowing the lawn this summer (my brother usually does it but he can't as he will be out of state) but she is a throw back and insists on doing it. We are thinking of hiring a lawn service to do it but she is resistant. I can't do it as I live 2000 miles away so that's not exactly an option! LOL

FWIW, Ariens and Honda are the best that I know of. Ariens is a Wisconsin based company...good people!

Back when I had a lawn, that Ariens I had was rock solid and dead reliable. My son has it now and still going strong after about 13 years or so.

I have this same mower. The best mower I have owned. I live in South Texas and rarely break a sweat using it.
