Is this test worthy of a solid conclusion? Charted results at 8:25.

Basically the same result between using nothing and 4 of the penetrating oils?

Did the oxidizer he used simulate the "real" oxidation occuring naturally? I'm not a Chemist - lol. I know he's just trying running a test in his garage, so I appreciate the effort.

I'd like to see:
1) The same volume of each penetrant applied to each fastener.
2) Larger sample size, although he is doing this on his own dime - I presume.
3) Duplication of the results by him and others.

(Some of the comments are amusing)

Personal experience, Kroil is a fantastic product that has outperformed other brands through the years. My father was a machinist/millwright so I grew up using most all of these. His testing is flawed in multiple ways. Differing axial force he imparted to individual bolts plays a big part, plus using angle iron and only allowing the thin edge of the lug to touch can skew results easily. He said he torqued them all to 100 ft/lbs yet some came off well under 100 is a red flag as the breakaway torque required shouldn't have lessened unless the metal fatigued or his initial numbers were wrong...or the forces he exerted weren't equal as stated earlier.

I think it was back in the early 2000's that a machinist digest or some magazine my father got did a lab controlled test with a machine to ensure the initial and post values weren't skewed by the operator. Basically a robotic controlled torque machine and the hardware was held to strict tolerances, I want to say within .0001 of each other. Application time and everything else a test like that would entail were computer controlled to eliminate variables. Initial values were somewhere around 500 ft/lbs without a penetrant and the Kroil got that down to 100 or so besting the rest. I've seen it break things loose where others have failed so I've stuck with it over the years.

It's all about application and proper use, but in the end it's damn near impossible to ensure that every nut and bolt experiences the exact same physical changes. This test, while possible a better/best case example for a DIY scenario, is still woefully inadequate compared to a controlled environment in a lab.

Redline does. Sad when Amazon Basics oil out performs Royal Purple. Redline is better than Amsoil too, double the anti wear additives. But if you change anything a lot I guess it doesn’t matter, use whatever gives you the feels.

A single sample analysis of unused oil is hardly difinitive on which is superior. Beside more isn’t always better. It’s how the different additives work together. Another thing to keep in mind is, in the chemical industry, not all additives of the same name are created equal. They can have vastly different quality and specifications.

Fouling out cats with excessive anti-wear additives is a real issue as well, and I am a little surprised that wasn’t highlighted a bit more. Amsoil sells an oil very similar to the Redline, but doesn’t recommend you use it in an emission controlled vehicle for this very reason.

Man you guys are crazy for not using penetrating oil. I did ball joints on my truck the other day, and one of the lowers was being a particularly huge pain in the ass.

3 minutes of dwell time with some gibbs penetrating oil and it dropped out with 1/3 the effort I was using before.
