How far have you traveled for a car?

you just have to trust the seller/owner. I can smell bullshit from a mile away, just by the conversation. It's critical to talk for a while and ask super detailed questions. Next step would be a carfax/auto check. Then maybe the seller will meet you a few hours closer (best case scenario). The more questions you ask, the better off you will be. You can buy sight unseen on Ebay etc but you better have a steep discount, just in case you end up with a pile of shit. Pictures can be bull shit so you have to be very very careful. I remember the first Viper I went to see. I was so ****ing pissed. The online pictures showed a mint car (it was a dealership). When I showed up it looked like the Viper had been ran over by a 53 foot trailer.

Farthest traveled or bought? Last car was 2,869 mi (42hr) and current car is 1062mi (16 hr). I read reviews and options. Get what I want in my head and then search US wide for exactly that.

Furthest was from Palm Beach Gardens to roughly Arlington VA. Think it was further south of there but it was a 14 hour drive back, roughly 1100-1200 miles.

Furthest for me was from Orlando to Atlanta for my '03 Cobra. Got a nice surprise when I showed up and looked the car over: the front tires were down to the cords on the inside. The seller had no idea, and offered to pay for new tires. He actually turned a bit white, as he said he did a few pulls on the way to pick me up to the airport (visible parts of the tires looked fine). The only problem was finding tires on a saturday so I could make the drive home... It added 4+ hours to the drive home, but it all worked out.

I had a buddy fly to NY to pick up a car and drive it back to Atlanta. He got all the way to VA before he fell asleep at the wheel and totaled the car...oops.

I flew to San Diego twice to get the two toys in my signature. Was going to get the BMW in LA, but found a deal locally in the Bay Area for one.

For some reason the toys are cheaper in Socal. Well its not for some reason, the money is up here in norcal because of the Tech. So prices/competition is higher.

The furthest I've traveled for a car is from central CT to South Bend, IN to buy my C6Z. It wasn't a horrible drive home, but trying to take it easy and just cruise on the highway @ 70mph for 800 miles with a BTR Stage 4 cam was kind of annoying. Not something I'd care to do again. However, I would do it again for something stock that would be a daily driver.

I just traveled from Michigan to Atlanta for an 03 Mach. I researched a few options that made the most sense. I ended driving down to check out the car in person. Did my homework, Carfax and talked to seller multiple times before heading down there. As I don’t own a trailer or truck I elected to ship the car home when I decided I wanted to buy it. The Mach is Procharged and didn’t want to drive it home for 11 hours. After leaving in a huge rainstorm, I was glad I chose not to drive it home. The shipping company charged 500 bucks for an open trailer home. Car is set to arrive tomorrow afternoon. It is a bit nerve racking having someone else drive it home, praying it arrives unharmed.

More people and cars in SoCal so there’s more competition....

Longest trip I did was roughly 22 hours round trip to pickup a 86 735i parts car. It was a ridiculous trip which involved towing my friends totaled 04 crown vic sport out to ohio, to meet a friend from buffalo who was buying it, then driving 10min down the road to get my parts car, then driving to MD to drop it off, then back to NJ. It was certainly an adventure.

For the black marauder, I drove to Maryland, then a friend and I drove from Maryland to RI to get the Uhaul trailer, back to CT to pick the car up, then back to MD the next day to drop it off at his house, then I drove back to NJ after. That to/from drive felt like an eternity in a F250.

The M5 I went down to maryland and back for, that was only about 4 1/2 hours, nothing crazy compared to the 735i parts car.

Stop it....making me think twice on the truck I’m trying to buy and ship. It’s 1k miles north just across the border.

That is an awesome ranger, extra points for the gear jammer

In March ‘02, I was stationed in LaMaddalena, Italy which is a large island off the western coast of the “boot”. I opted for a factory delivery of my E46 M3. We took a rented Volvo on an overnight ferry to northern Italy, then drove to Munich. It was about 400 miles if memory serves, but it was a great trip for my me, my wife and young daughters. I broke that BMW in right on the Autobahn and have great memories from the trip.

European delivery is a great option, a friend of mine has a 03 330xi which was a one owner car, the original owner opted for euro delivery and was able to do a couple of spec changes on the assembly line, including some individual wood trim and the euro warning triangle kit.

Would be great to go back to 2000 and euro deliver my M5

When I was younger and dumb, I bought a 70 Chevelle with a 454 and M21 from a dude off ebay after I lost a bid on a different Chevelle he had for sale. Just pics and this dudes word. Drove from Tucson to Albuquerque in the middle of the night.

The car was a mistake for sure, but it made some good memories and experiences in life. Ultimately, my lack of ability to actually fix that car up is what led me to become a professional technician.

It’s extremely nerve racking. When my cobra was being shipped from Cali to mass I was told by the dispatcher that I can’t contact the truck driver until 1 day before it was suppose to be delivered. Well, the day before it was suppose to come I called 10 times throughout the day and he never answered. Day of delivery and still nothing. Car showed up 3 days later than it was suppose to. For those 3 days I was pretty confident that I was scammed and the car was stolen lol.

Okay, everyone can get a good laugh - 1 mile. Out of my development, onto the highway, go about a mile and turn in to the dealership lot. Had a 2010 Shelby the color I wanted and only 1400 miles. After I had been looking all over the East Coast. Dumb luck.

I didn’t necessarily travel, but my 2000R came from Michigan, had it shipped here to Mass.

And years ago my brother was looking for a 1996 Impala SS, dark red with grey interior.
In 2001 My friend was working at the bmw dealership and they took one in trade, low miles, one owner, etc. I went and looked it over, it was mint, called my brother in Atlanta, and he bought it over the phone. I took the car home, and had it shipped down to him. Car was everything he wanted, he had it for many years as his weekend car.

Dude I’m going through the exact same thing right now. I’ve called Atleast 5 times today. They keep you in the dark when it comes to actually delivering the car. I’ll be glad when it’s in the garage.

upstate NY to Atlanta for a $900 30-year old Jeep. Between buying it and driving it back, it changed a bit.
