so what would you like me to say? Nothing I say is going to make it better, I can send thoughts and prayers but that is a pretty hollow thing anymore. It is so easily said and rarely meant. And if God is going to do anything about it he will do it without my repeating it here. The guy will get his in the end. He will go to prison and they will take care of him there and then God will see to it that he is held accountable. And all this without me saying a damn word about it so you can pass your hypocritical judgement on my character.

I hope the boy recovers and does not die. And I hope the POS coward that did this gets put down in the cheapest manner possible so tax payers don't have to carry the burden.

I’m sorry, but sending thoughts and prayers is NOT a “pretty hollow thing” as you put it. How do you know it is “rarely meant”? You are not a mind reader so don’t pretend to be one.

for those that say it and mean it good for them. but I have seen self proclaimed athiests post that. I was expressing my opinion, you may not agree or it may to apply to you, and thats fine. it does not, however, change my opinion.

I’m still a little miffed at the title of OP’s post. The event would’ve been just as tragic without the words white and black.

Actually I disagree.
Picture the media’s reaction if a white dude threw a black baby over the railing.
Oh. He must be a Trump supporter.

Ehhhhh.......

There are people who honestly believe praying will help the child and if that is what they believe, good for them. We all need to have some type of belief to keep us going. As someone who sees the world around him, I have to question how helpful prayer seems to be these days. Unfortunately the child needs a great deal of luck.

Part of me wants to turn this into a Theological discussion about prayer. The other part of me is exhausted and preoccupied.
don't. the last thing we need is to turn this into a religious discussion. you have your beliefs but on this board it will only turn into a dogma argument back and forth. Science HAS proven that prayer can be beneficial when patients are involved. "Thoughts and prayers" are seriously over hyped tripe when you don't know the person involved and are thousands of miles away.

It’s a shame what monsters there are in this world. Unfortunately this situation brought a reason to lock him up somehow because he hadn’t committed any felonies up to this point.

I didn’t say the prayer could help the child. To me, showing some concern and empathy, and sending “thoughts and prayers” to the child and his family and friends of family is doing what we can in the moment to support them.

Was gonna day the exact same. I’m not religious by any stretch. But I’ve said a prayer to God in a few situations where I thought me or someone else at work was ****ed.

As far as extending it to someone else, I agree with the above. It shows empathy and support which may be just what the person needs to keep going.

Showing concern through actions is what can help some of the grief and shock and sadness. The prayer part is just following the script and IMO there are better ways to show support for the family.

I think just the opposite. "Thoughts and prayers" is synonymous with saying "I will do nothing at all."

For example, you would be pissed if you dropped something in front of someone and instead of them helping you they said that they "pray for you." That applies to every other situation. It really means "I am either too lazy or do not care enough or incapable of actually doing something so instead I will pretend like I am actually doing something."

exactly. thoughts and prayers from someone you don't know and never know about are worthless except of course to those that beat their chest and say "I DID IT why haven't you?"

but how does it help the person if a) they don't know you and b) they will never know you sent that empathy along? for someone you know I agree showing empathy is a good thing. showing empathy even for people on this forum is at least something they see and can say thank you and perhaps get something from it. but if you don't know the person even casually throwing out a "thoughts and prayers" is worthless except maybe it makes the person sending them feel better about themselves. If thats the case fine but don't judge someones character just because they don't.

Despite the race of all those involved, this is a horrific crime and it would be just as horrific if the race roles where reversed.

Obviously, this man's brain is broken. Just as anyone's would have to be in order to carry out such a despicable act against another person, child or not.
