I really don't understand why some of you guys are entertaining this stupidity. We don't have to prove the earth is a sphere (i know, close approximation to) these time wasters have to prove it's flat or what every other dumb ****ing shape they think it is.

In his mind he is proving the earth is flat based on the fact that he can see his stop sign. I'm just trying to help him see that there is a perfectly sound explanation for him being able to see it on a spheroid.

Besides, slow day at work. It's either this or YouTube. Lol

Pure and utter boredom while being amused by the imagination some people have.

"I'm just saying it's technically possible to orbit a 2D object like the flat earth in this case. "

This whole thing reminds me of a conversation in a local gun shop. Three fellows were discussing what would happen if a person standing in the front of a plane travelling at 900 fps shot a pistol with a muzzle velocity of 900 fps at a person in the rear of the plane. I told them an observer on the ground would see the bullet accelerate to 0 relative to the ground, while the plane dragged the guy in the back of the plane into it at 900 fps. The people in the plane would notice no difference from any other shooting.

One of the guys said, "I know that's what the physics says, but is that what really happens?" To which I replied, "First off, I don't believe for a second that you knew that is what the physics says. Second, what do you think physics is?"

It took me a while to convince them this was not some mysterious, burning question in physics, the answer to which no one really knew for sure.

Just to keep it going I would have said the bullet traveled at 1800fps during the mid air flight. Then I would have left, smiling, knowing that I just started an endless debate.

Excellent story! A definite thinker.

That explains why you always want to be the cops shooting forward at the bad guys and not the guy in the fleeing car shooting backwards. He has no chance with his bullet falling out of the air.

On a related note, really smart how they made bullets to curve downwards so they could follow the curvature of the earth and not make you have to shift your aim to get over the hump. Again, physics!

I would love to see a picture of the other side of the earth. Why don't you guys just get together and travel to the edge and prove the world and scientists wrong. You'll all be famous

NASA is actually a Security regime responsible for not allowing anyone to take pictures of the wall or the end/edge of the earth. They are the gate keepers if you will.

Or look at the math and tell me where I'm wrong?

Ok. Pythagoras's method: two sticks of equal height in two places separated by a couple of miles, measure the length of the shadow of each stick at the same time of the day, apply his old formula, boom: there's your math, the method, and how and why it is inescapably incorrect to believe the Earth is flat. All with two sticks, two pieces of string, a bit of math, and a buddy you can trust to make his observation at the same time you make yours, and report it back to you.

Not proving anything. Just asking questions.

So no rebuttal to my explanation for your stop sign?

Think of it this way. Set the stop sign elevation as zero. You are 92ft in elevation higher than the stop sign. Plus the 5' you gave yourself for your curvature in your calculation. So your eyesight level is 97' higher than the stop sign.

Here is the calculation for those parameters:

View attachment 1565498

Basically the elevation change is enough to cancel out the curvature making the stop sign 100% visible as long as your vision is up to the task.

That is the simplest way I can explain it for you.

Not yet. I wanna do some more experiments with it to see how far I can actually see it from and to see the actual elevation from where I was. I had just taken the info from the city limit signs. Thanks for the info though! You may very well be correct.

I remember being out at sea in the Navy and seeing ships miles away. You could just see their mast but not the ship. I remember saying to myself often..."Yup..the earth is flat". No....no I didn't.

Yes, and your ship could be DIW and from any direction you’d observe the same phenomenon as ships arrived and departed on any bearing.

Huh, I didn’t see the Flat Earth Society on the agenda...

I have logged on many times just to see what direction this thread has gone.

So working at a failed Government project while they were shutting it down me (I&C Engineer/Math Degree), and a coworker with a Masters in Nuclear Engineering went down the rabbit hole of flat earthers to kill time. Most of their "proof" was math equations that where very incorrect but stated were correct, ie 5+5 is 6 and no matter what you are wrong if you say otherwise, and laws of physics that they just pulled out their ass. Many have to do with how light works.

Though some were just pulling shit out their ass. I never know if someone is doing it as a joke and others believed or if these are real people. One of the big ones was as I stated in previous post is that NASA is a Security force and not a space administration. Antarctica is actually an Ice Wall around the edge of the earth that holds the water in and NASA stands guard on it so no one can fall off. The reason for NASA making fake pictures from space, in their words cameras can't work in space so there is your proof of flat earth right there, is so no one goes looking for the end of the earth and falls off.
