Recommendations for winter/retirement home

My wife and I starting to consider a 2nd home in a warmer climate to get away from the harsh winters up north and for retirement.

I would like to hear any recommendations that you may have.

Wish List
Clean / safe community
At least 50 degrees in the winter months on most days
By water or scenic hills is a plus. (Live In flat cornfield country today)
Decent value for the $
Access to decent business and shops (not looking to live in the sticks)

She thinks Florida. I prefer somewhere along the shore in South Carolina, NC, TN or Georgia. That being said I am open to all ideas.

CA - too high priced and too liberal for our tastes

The South East is hot, humid, and full of mosquitoes. I think Cali is looking for new residents. VA and NC might suit your needs.

I live in SC and personally if I was wanting to live near the beach it would not be Mrytle Beach, that area continues to get worse every year. We use to take our family vacations there and no longer do. Only time I ever consider going is bike week or mustang week I would go further south down the cost towards Charleston. It’s nicer and with the port and new Volvo plant right outside the area everything is still responsibly priced but quickly on the rise so would get a great ROI one day.

VA definitely and most likely anywhere on the east coast north of FL will be too cold. In Jacksonville FL it still dropped into the 30s on the regular.

I love South Carolina might seriously consider moving there when I retire. Isle of Palms near Charleston is nice, but pricey right on the water. Hilton Head and Beaufort are also nice, although I've heard the crime in Beaufort is pretty high.

Phoenix Metro: Peoria, Surprise, Anthem, Cave Creek, Carefree, North Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Fountain Hills. Absolutely beautiful country out here. Lake Pleasant to the NW of the metro area and Salt River to the east.

Just stay out of SW Phoenix, South Glendale, Tolleson, parts Goodyear and Avondale, most of Mesa, Guadalupe, Maryvale, and DEFINITELY DONT go to Apache Junction.

Tucson (and metro): Oro Valley, Winterhaven, Catalina Foothills, West Tucson in the foothills.

South of Tucson and the I-10 its Cowboy country (illegals). North of I-10 and up is ok. No issues in Phoenix.

Sorry to see that California is off your list. The central coast weather is absolutely perfect!
Besides, it would be nice if I had someone else to vote conservative with me. Just think, you could send a message to Washington by DOUBLING the conservative vote in Cali.

I grew up in Maryvale.

I was just in Scottsdale and stayed at Talking Stick Resort and while I had some downtime was scoping out local real estate and Cave Creek is definitely up high on my list. Some interesting looking properties with some space.

I have a co-worker who owns a rental in Apache and he has owned it for like 10 or 12 years. Still upside down on it!

Florida is the rental car state of the US. A lot of people are here “temporarily” and treat each other accordingly.

Summer feels like climbing into a clothes dryer when it’s halfway done.

The state doesn’t have the infrastructure to support the influx of residents and traffic is enough to make you want to move. That, and the way people drive.

Love bugs.

It rains almost every afternoon from May - October.

I’d move but my wife’s family is here.
