Don't blame you. We have a good family friend who is a real estate agent and showed us homes but it would have to be free for me to involve her again in buying/selling a home. And yes, I know, as a buyer we didn't directly write her a check but the house we bought was also 6% more expensive than it needed to be.

I almost got in a fight today with a customer that probably would have resulted in my firing.

Little ghetto white kid has his mommy call me to set up an appointment to have this pos Contour towed in and the water pump replaced at their request on a tight budget. We get the car, check the water pump and it is leaking so we replace it like they said. We hadn't ran the car yet so when we finally did my techs found that it had a blown head gasket... it's toast.

I call and tell them and he asks why I didnt know that and says he shouldn't be paying for the water pump now, and besides, he states he doesn't even own the car hinting that he is going to bail on it. His mom says she will pay for it but that he needs to get his stuff out of it (they are going to bail). I cant keep him from getting his stuff so he comes in this morning.

He looks at the old water pump and starts bitching at us inside our shop for not diagnosing the engine. I said "you didnt ask me to, you asked me to replace the water pump". He states he told me to daignose it, and I replied "How would you tell me to diagnose it when your mom set this up for you? I diagnosed the water pump was leaking so I replaced it like you wanted and now you want to complain and back out of paying for what you wanted". He is holding the pump in his hand and he sort of squares up and says in his half retard stuttering voice "You better wipe that smirk off your face jackass". I stood there for a second to see of he was going to swing and then told him to get the **** out of my shop. I've been in this situation multiple times and my hands are always pretty much tied unless someone physically assaults me first. I'm going to strip the parts we put on back off the car and then tow it to their house and leave it in their driveway... possibly on fire, haven't decided yet.

I always try to make a point to tell the customer we need to diagnose the problem before just replacing the parts they want. That way if their diagnosis is wrong, we caught it. However if they dont want to pay diag I tell them I'll replace whatever you want but I can't be responsible if that doesn't fix it.

That and I never return cars until they are paid for, maybe I'm more petty than you lol. I've let cars sit for years in the back of the parking lot before. Can't you do a mechanic's lean or is it not worth it?

Sort of the situation we had and we usually do diag first but this was what they wanted and when I tried to do other things they declined because the car wasn't worth it. I would drag it out with them but with how they dont even own the car then that is where there is going to be issues. We may go a few routes but my boss hates keeping cars like that on the lot. He doesn't have much hope of getting anything back so he just washes his hands of it.

Sucks... Next time charge them up front if they want work without a diagnosis.

OP, I saw your thread last night and was WTF? My morning started going to a spec house that is nearly complete. The new realiter took the hidden job key and locked it in her box, without permission or sharing the combo. (I had two subs showing up) I opened with my master, but noticed the heat was turned off. Water on house core temp at 54. Freezing outside. Could have been a disaster. I changed the locks, right then. She's was under the impression she was in charge. Wrong! Investors probably pissed, but I can't risk dumb ass in the house.

Can you tell me more about mechanic liens? I know that these are common among commercial contractors. Are they common among auto mechanics? Can I buy them from lien holders?

This is what started it. She wanted a few things changed I said that fine here’s a change order. She rolled her eyes, gave us an attitude and that’s where it got ugly.

You did the right thing. It's always best to get the signature first. I sacrificed 120 man hours the last week before with good weather outside, working the crew inside so she could make a brochure. Most are reasonable, this one is wack.

I dont even think stripping it would make it any worse than it is. It's a real pile. I want to do as much as I can to make it hard on these people while trying to get some money out of it. It's a real catch .22.

Yep. If they declined to diagnose it, I make a separate line on the RO.
