With all the high horsepower cars that have been rolling out of the manufacturers over that last few years, anyone ever get depressed when you think this may be the last hurrah? Dont get me wrong I love the HP wars etc, but how much longer will it last before our loud obnoxious engines and exhaust are replaced with the sound of silence.
Electric/hybrid vehicles are rapidly becoming the norm. I'm wondering how much longer we will have our new models of gas powered V8s.

I think there will always be a niche community for ICE vehicles, even if most mainstream cars switch to EV.

I would say, maybe 80-90% of people dont give a shit about what they are driving, to them it is just a method of transportation, it gets them from A to B to C and whatever does it cheapest and most conveniently is what they are going to buy.

I see those people eventually switching to EV's once they start to get under the 30k barrier with decent range. Being able to charge your car at home, not have to worry about gas and oil changes and whatever else it going to be a huge plus to a lot of people.

The other thing that would increase adoption rate is if gas went up in price and stayed there, but there is no telling if or when that might happen.

Hard to tell

The future political landscape will play a large role on whether or not high HP internal combustion engines (especially V8's) keep going.

It could potentially only take a few political cycles with the the wrong party in power to kneecap the whole thing. Think "Green Deal"

i don't think we're even close. i remember when i was in high school, there were two magic numbers. 300hp and you had a fast car. 400hp and you were the king of the hill. now the average half ton pickup truck has 400hp. the horsepower wars will probably accelerate even more once hybrid sports cars and muscle cars become more commonplace. think of the fastest tesla right now as maybe like a buick gnx back in the day. that was the fastest thing on the road for a while, but now a toyota camry is almost as fast. so you will have crazy hybrids and still get your engine noise

pure gas powered cars will probably be a thing of the past in 15-20 years though, except in very limited and expensive versions. they will be like expensive watches or boats.
