Would like some opinions on the vid. It was giving me some issues shifting a couple weeks ago. I replaced the cable and things seemed ok. Today i was racing someone and the car developed the noise in the vid.

sounds rough. hard to tell what that noise might be though. i'd start by taking out the trans and inspecting the clutch. if that all looks good, it's probably in the trans.

can you still drive it?

I drove it a little more before the noise became that present. Once i heard it, i parked the car at home. I plan to pull the trans soon and inspect the clutch.

First thing I'd inspect would be the tob retainer tube, is it stock?

Stock ones usually crack near the base.

At this point you need to pull the trans and inspect. If not your guessing. There’s multiple things that could be wrong but it starts with removal and inspection.

Yep, I see that pulling the trans will be step one. Problem is I’d like to inspect the clutch also but with these Mac longtubes I can only access the side and bottom starter bolts. The top one is impossible for me to even get to. I can’t even find that damn thing. Any guys have experience removing the starter with these headers? Maybe I’m missing something. First time attempting to tackle this.

Cj, I’m trying to way my options on which route to even go. If it is the trans. Magnum or rebuild. I know there are a few things with the magnum to consider. A little massaging on the fork and possibly the tunnel. New slip yoke and driveshaft shortening. Is there anything else involved in the magnum swap, electrical or even a plug or fitting that isn’t there. Read something about those in older threads. Just want my bases to be completely covered with zero surprises.

Its silly to rebuild a t56, its best to just part it out, you can get close to a complete t56 price.

The clutch fork is only an issue on some twin disc clutches. You ll have to slightly mod the floor. I tried to avoid it but it wouldn't clear. You'll need a yoke, shorten the driveshaft, a plug for the mechanical speedo hook up and thats it. The wiring fits with no mods just have to reroute it and use zipties.

Where did you purchase the plug for the speedo hookup? Appreciate your feedback CJ, trying to get all the info i can. Wanted to make sure all the electrical is plug and play. Driveshaft length should be cut an 1"-1 1/4"?

You can get the mechanical speedo plug lots of places, I got mine off ebay, it was billet aluminum and pretty cheap $25 or less.

Those numbers on the driveshaft sound close but I measured the length after the transmission was installed then I had my local driveshaft shop shorten a spare stock shaft I had.

The hardest part of the Magnum install is actually installing the transmission. The Magnum has to be installed with the shifter on the transmission so it takes some work to get it in. I have a lift and a transmission jack, and it was still kind of a PITA. I'd hate to be doing it on the garage floor by hand or with just a floor jack.

So it’s just basically a block off plug? I seen those on eBay. I have a trans jack but no lift. Everything else is just plug and play for everything else? I read about something with the reverse lockout, does that apply to our cars? Sorry for all the questions, trying to be prepared the best I can.

eBay

Something like that.

Everything wiring related is plug and play. The harness routes different on the transmission but it all works

I will 2nd to buy the magnum. They stopped making a lot of the t56 parts awhile ago. The magnum stock is stronger than most built t56s.
The tranzilla with the gforce gear set is stronger than a stock magnum, but costs a good bit more.

There was a magazine article that had the differences in the T56 magnum and the T56. The Magnum had 15% wider gears to help spread the load. Thats what sold me on the Magnum, after blowing the teeth off gears in my T56 I didn't see a reason to put the same gears back in.

Unless I'm nuts I removed/installed my shifter in car. Remeber a little fanagling. Think I had to lower the trans quite a bit with cross member off. Then tightening the bolts was interesting.
