Let me start off by saying: I am not a professional, I will freely admit to making mistakes or not doing things "by the book".

This car belongs to my aunt, she bought it brand new in 2003 and it currently has 19,000 miles on it. The car has sat outside for the past couple of years and went to complete shit. I decided to take on this detailing project in the middle of winter to push the envelope of what I've restored and see if I can get this looking like a 19k mile car again.

This thread will have some progression as it's going to take me multiple days and I just ordered a new round of supplies from autogeek as I am low.

I'm currently using a PC 7424XP + M105 / M205. It's providing good results but honestly I think I'll need something a bit more aggressive, more on that later.

Here is an overview of how I got the car

This is what I've done so far:

Exterior: 2 bucket wash, foam lance, griots garage soap, iron-x on wheels and paint around wheels

Interior: Vacuum, simple green + interior brush

Engine: Sonax engine cleaner + soft bristle brush for plastic

It's coming along so far, and I realize most people aren't going to do an interior detail with simple green but this car was so stained and dirty I had to use something strong to get the stains out. It brought the seats back to a nice matte finish, I do intend on treating this with real leather products soon.

I also had a slightly used headlight sanding kit kicking around which I put to good use. I'd like to pop these out entirely one day and sand them with a new kit.

20190127_192931-X3.jpg

The hood had a ton of dirt on the sides, 90% of it is off. I figure I can claybar the last of it off once I have some spare clay that I won't use on the paint again.

20190127_193457-X3.jpg

20190127_193848-X3.jpg

I went ahead and started with the hood as IMO it was the biggest eyesore. Even after washing it looked like the paint was starting to oxidize. I used a 100G claybar on the hood and to my surprise it didn't come out nearly as dirty as I had expected. I was able to clay some stains out of the hood which is great, but I was expecting the thing to turn from white to brown since this car has never been clayed before.

Dirt stains on the hood

Not a great photo, but the bottom half is after clay, top is untouched

DSC_1818-X2.jpg

One thing I am noticing, the hood seems to have a brown tint to it compared to the fenders, I honestly think it's still dirt stained. This is more of why I figured I need to try something stronger than M105 on an orange pad with a PC7424XP. I ordered some yellow pads to try and see if that has any change. I'm not entirely sure how much I can do only using a PC7424XP and I have yet to step up to a flex. Might be something I try in the future when it's warmer out.

DSC_1815-X2.jpg

So if anyone wants to throw suggestions for methods or product my way, feel free. This is all a learning curve for me, I've never let any of my cars get near this bad. I am open to suggestions on products that work as well if not better as M105/M205 but are easier to buff off the car as well. I think buffing M105 off the car is the entire reason I hate doing paint correction.

I recomend shine supply for polishes. I am a die hard Adam's fan but love the products from shine supply. I also have used the griots BOSS system and like it alot. You should be able to do some decent correction with a Porter cable just will take a little more time . For the seats I recomend Adam's leather conditioner. Will leave the seats treated and not greasy or shiny. If you have any questions shoot me a message.

'03 with 19K? Nice. Good job on detailing it so far.

Thanks, yeah my aunt never drove this thing. Yet again, the empty pack of cigarettes under the seat and the Lynyrd Skynyrd CD I found in the radio might suggest otherwise. Somewhere under all this dirt is a 19k mile car.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into this stuff.

A friend of mine is shipping up some of his Menzerna products to try out. I'm also hoping my order from autogeek ships soon or I may have to hold off on this until it's spring time.

Here is what I picked up in the last order, got 25% off!

1 GY-1940 - 50ml GYEON Leather Shield (I saw @NastyGT500 suggesting this stuff, figured I'd try it)
1 GY-1930 - 500ml GYEON Leather Cleaner
1 PC-810 - Grey Ultra Soft Upholstery Brush
1 PC-830 - Aqua Soft Carpet Brush
1 COBRA-WW1627-3 - 3 Qty Waffle Weave Microfiber Glass T
3 SM-28-876 - 16X16 Inches Blue Edgeless
1 SON-283241 - 500 ml. SONAX Dashboard Cleaner Matte Fin
1 SON-543200 - 500 ml. SONAX Engine Cleaner
1 SON-627400 - 750 ml. Sonax Multi Star All Purpose Clea
1 WM-200 - Koala Wash Mitt
1 303-30520 - 303 Fabric Convertible Top Kit
1 RT-08700 - RaggTopp Premium Convertible Top Brush
1 LC-75-6PACK - 6 Qty 5 ½ Inch Lake Country Flat Pads

Here are a couple shots of the interior, again, not anywhere near finished but at least I can tolerate being inside now. Major improvement over how I drove the car home.

That thing is turning out nicely! Love the silver/red combo! LOW mileage, fun car!

Keep it going, that thing will look like new!

And as said above, the 7424 will do wonders...it was all we had years ago!! (besides a rotary)

Thanks, still a long way to go. My autogeek order won't get here til friday and it's supposed to be 13 tomorrow and 20 friday. I'm not sure how much detailing I'll be able to get done in temps like that, even with the two heaters I have on order. I have a feeling my father is going to end up buying this off my aunt so if that happens I'll wait til it gets a bit warmer and see what I can do.

I drove it to work yesterday which almost turned out to be a mistake. Had I left a half hour later (my usual time), I would have been stuck somewhere.

Thats a nice car. N/A bimmers of that gen are fantastic drivers.

My wife and I had a 2005 330i coupe with the ZHP performance package 10 or so years ago and it was an AWESOME car to drive and throw around into turns.

A friend of mine has a slick top 330i ZHP sedan with alcantara seats, he's about to start a full M3 driveline conversion next month. I know these ZHP's are desirable cars even today, they sell for a good bit more than a normal 330i.

Weather finally picked up, no more high of 12 low of -1.

Got back to working on the car today, actually ran it through the touchless car wash then claybarred the entire car.

I'm trying out some Presta Ultra Cutting Cream, which is supposed to handle up to 1200 grit sanding marks. I'm using this on a yellow foam pad with the 7424XP set to the highest speed. I tried the Menzerna P019E but I believe that is less aggressive as it states it can only remove up to 2000 grit sanding marks.

I think the problem with this paint is two-fold: BMW's are known for having really hard clear coat, I don't think my M5 is like this but the Z4 appears to be and it was built in the same factory in SC as my mothers F15 X5 which has very hard clear. My detailer using a Rupes and his most aggressive products couldn't get all the dealer washing marks out.

I think the other problem is my 7424XP isn't strong enough and I really need a Rupes or a Flex, but that isn't going to happen soon, so I'll have to just improve it as much as I can.

This is after a second clay, this really shows how bad the paint is. I really question if this thing ever got washed, I'm sure it was run through the swirl-o-matic a few times

After a few passes with the Presta UCC

DSC_1836-X2.jpg

Top is untouched, bottom hit with UCC

DSC_1837-X2.jpg

Hood and tops of fenders done, I figure I'll go over the whole car with compound before I start the polish.

I'm hoping after it's polished out it starts to gloss a bit more, but I'm afraid I might only have the power to take this from "real shit" to "kind of ok"

Up your pad. Either microfiber or wool with your 7424 and you will get some cut. You will have to finish it out as those pads will induce marring after cutting out your heavy defects.

Make sure you measure your paint prior to going nuts on it to make sure you've got enough clear!

Any opinions on something like this? Sounds like this is what I'd need to go even more aggressive

Lake Country Thin Foamed Wool Pads

I do have a paint meter, I really should check the thickness especially since I'm going this far.

Do you really think a 7424XP will have the power to bring a real gloss back to this paint? I figured I would have to step up to a real rotary.

Yes, those pads will cut like a champ. Please, measure your paint and see what you're working with prior to going heavy duty on it!

Yes, your PC will do the job, it may take a little longer, but it will get the job done. Remember, slow arm speed, decent downward pressure and work smaller sections.

(remember, before Rupes, Flex, etc, all we had were rotaries and 7424 type machines...and they worked back then!)

Sounds good, I've got them on order. I have to find my paint meter, think I left it in the garage or in the M5.

I did a little work on the interior today after I got home since it was 55 out. Wanted to try out my new soft scrubber attachment for the 7424 so I cleaned and coated the seats. Came out nice, the seats have a nice slick feel with a matte finish.

Products used:
Q2 Leather Cleaner
Ultra Soft Brush + 7424 speed 4
Q2 Leather Shield

One thing I noticed today that I had not before, the trunk of this car is actually in a lot better shape than the hood. I have been so focused working up front I didn't realize I could probably correct the rest of this car with the Presta UCC and yellow pads while I wait for the pads I just ordered to do the hood again.

This is a shot of the trunk, I haven't done anything to the rest of the car aside from a wash and claybar, it actually feels pretty smooth and has a gloss to it already. The rest of this car should clean up nice while I wait for my order.

Cleaning up pretty well.

I'm interested in how much paint is left on the hood.

Apparently more than I had expected

I went ahead and did the leather on the door panels as well. I bought some Sonax dash cleaner which I'll use on the hard parts of the door panel soon.

So I went ahead and took some paint measurements and I did not get what I was expecting. This car is all over the place, but for what I expect is mostly factory paint, it's thinner than any BMW I've measured. If I ever get the chance to do a reading on a z3 or another z4, or even something older made at the Spartanburg plant I'll have to try it.

Here we go

Apparently the door at one time was keyed and my Aunt had the door repainted, okay that would explain why it's between 5-6 depending on where I measure. But when I took a reading on the hood I nearly shit myself. It's reading between 6.8 to 8! I would not have expected this at all, I can't find any obvious tape lines or anything around the edges with the hood up, but it would explain why only the hood was so dull compared to the rest of the car I guess. While the hood was in that range, the tops of the fenders right next to the hood were in the mid to upper 3's, so something happened, I just don't know what. This is a one owner car so the chance of an incident with a prior owner is out the window.

Anyways, I took a stab at the trunk tonight, it was in better shape than the hood but still needed help.

I went over it a few times with the Presta UCC but it wasn't doing enough. I went back and tried it with M105 and it made a small dent.

After

Remember the deep scratch? Well it's still there, but it's not nearly as noticeable anymore

I got curious with this M105 and the yellow pad, so I went back to the hood and worked a small area with multiple passes.

Before

DSC_1870-X2.jpg

After

DSC_1871-X2.jpg

DSC_1872-X2.jpg

It did start to bring more of a shine out on the hood and it felt smooth like the trunk, so I think when the wool pads arrive, wool + M105 is going to be the magic combo. I'll have to tape off small sections and work it with many passes to try and capture my progress.

This car is absolutely kicking my ass, I didn't expect anything this bad and I was very under equipped for this kind of job. I think I'm going to wait for my wool pads to show up as these yellow pads will only make a very minor improvement with my DA, not worth my time to do it twice. I guess I'll see if I can finish up the interior this week, vacuuming it out again then scrubbing it with the stiff brush I bought for the 7424.
