I am looking for buying a mustang as my second car for track days. And I have three cars in my mind. The terminator, 07-09 GT 500, and the 12-13 boss.
I love all three cars and they all have really good engine and a lot of fun IMO. For me, I will do very little power mods and mainly doing handling mods, since the car is already very powerful and capable in straight line. The rough plan is to tear off the interiors and back seats, get as much weight off as possible, and then install with full roll cage bucket seats, get the best tire and coliover i can afford and then go for a hell lot of track days.
Is there any suggestions? Considering the potential for both handling and power, reliability, cost for maintenance, insurance rates, and money saved for extra track days?

If those are the only 3 options then Boss is a no-brainer IMO.

If you're considering other options, I'd go for an S550 GT with Track Pack/Performance pack whatever it was. Better than a Boss and less heartburn when you gut and modify it.

I love the terminator body style, but if i were to do another track vehicle it would be a fox notch, all maximum motorsports suspension, the aluminator 5.2xs motor and a tremec magnum, and baer or wilwood 6 piston 14" brakes. light weight 18" wheels and toyo rrr tires or hoosier slicks

I have a terminator that I track. It will need substantial cooling mods to engine, intercooler, diff, vented hood etc. hard driving a stock one for longer than 15min will run into issues

I am drooling over this car!I love the 99-04 body style! The power must be obscene!I am building a twin turbo 2v using NRE mirror image turbos (61mm) but with injuries and running out of talent its been on hold for a year.

what specific features makes the S550 better than the boss? I thought 6 gen GT are heavier and has more electronics and thus more likely to break, plus the boss has better rods and internals for the engine.

Just been curious, how serious the overheating can be for the termi and shelby? I thought the stock engine should be fine since if they`re overheating all the time, then ford is gonna pay a lot for fixing the heat damage under warranty when they came out, i guess.

I can't speak for Shelbys, but the 03-04 cobras are notorious for heat issues. First investment needs to be a real temp gauge. Mine would hit 230 on track in less than 10-15 min houston summer. They can be great track cars but needs investment

All the comparisons and reviews I've read say the S550 GTPP beats the Boss 302 around a track. Combination of chassis, IRS, and lessons learned from the Boss 302 all work together to make it a great performer. The 15+ coyote is at least as strong as the roadrunner engine too, but still slight edge to the Boss there.

Hard driving on a road course is an entirely different thing than drag racing or street racing, especially when it comes to heat. Terminators are notoriously hot on the road course and take a lot of work to get it under control. Add power and it gets even worse.

How about the 07 Shelby? Is it the same problem as the termi?

I'm not as familiar with the GT500's, but anything supercharged will typically make a ton of heat on a road course. Hopefully others chime in with direct experience on them.

In the 427R
Roadrunner all the way.
Cobra jet kit
Full exhaust
Clutch
Weight reduction
MGW shifter assembly
MM Suspension kit
Wheels/tires
= deadly track animal.
Or S550, if I had a say it would be a Bullitt.

Pick your poison.

Of the three, Boss 302.

The '07 Shelby Mustang GT might almost make the cut as an alternate, except that you can take a 'regular' S197 GT and make it into just as effective a track-day toy for less $ than starting with the Shelby and still doing most of the same changes.
