So to start, some background info on my 13 gt. Last year i switched to a 17 short block and fore fuel system with opgs and css, which with my v2 vmp on 79mm pulley on e85 made 700/630 to the wheel through an mt82 with a mantic clutch and 331s.
This year, i decided to switch to the gen3 vmp 2650 on 12lb pulley, kenne bell 168mm throttle body, dd149 intake, and a built auto swap, keeping the same gear. I got it back from the tuner and drove her back home just fine. Went to the pump to get some 93 and see what she did on the local dyno since my tuner's dyno was acting up and i didnt really get a number that made sense. I ended up making 695 on 93 and on the 3rd past, blue smoke. Long story short, the rings are toast, most likely due to the fuel since im finding out my area has been having fuel issues lately.
So heres my dilemma...my tuner recommends we simply go with a fresh 15 short block with arp head studs and cometic gasket and we pull a tad bit if tining and run octane boosters while on 93, and possibly even change pulley. On e85, ill be balls to the wall, making who kniws what, but definitely more than 695. Im wondering if i should follow through with this or go all the way to a sleeved and forged block now. It is double to cost to go with the complete build and i just got through spending around 10k on my last round of mods.
What would you recommend? I would think on e85, i would be around 780whp and likely 690 tq.

if it is not your daily and the car can be down for 6-8 weeks I would pull the motor and have the 17 rebuild with studs and good rods and piston through a GOOD machine shop(easier said then done) I feel your pain I spent 6k last feb, then had a 11k incident when the crank broke and wiped out all the valvetrain and heads, radiator, oil pan- then the first outing out the head gasket failed- another 2k- so my 2018 hasn't been to financially positive as to cars and modding them

What kind of power are you making? Would the alluminator block suffice you think?

+ 800 - the head gaskets should not of failed in august- but the tuner/assembler points at the head shop- head shop pointed at the assembler- running the cometic gaskets now. And yes the aluminator should be good for 900 with good fuel and proper timing.

What power did you make with the v2, 79mm on 93? Also what cai were you using? 730whp on e85, i need a fuel system.

Such a tough call. Sorry to hear about this for the op and bunits. Op, I have 4 years into a Gen 1 Aluminator and it's been great so far. I did get stingy, exceeding the fuel system capabilities last spring and it cost me a head gasket. I wish there was a fool proof option. My best advice would be to have the builder assemble everything. Minimize the numbers of cooks in the kitchen. Take the engine cross country if you have to. I drove 12+ hours from Indiana to Oklahoma last May to get the hg repaired by a reputable guy (Trevor at Tricky Performance). I'll likely be back there when I need something big done and done right.

I assume I'm at the edge with my Aluminator. I have money saved for a short block, but am not going to pull this out while it's still going strong at this point. Depending on how mine shakes out will greatly influence where I take it from here. If it just gets tired and I don't hurt the block, it may never get sleeved. If I hurt a sleeve, I'll likely end up with a sleeved deal.

It's hard enough getting a good forged build. Adding sleeves is another variable. I would probably get a good forged build without sleeves if I were you.

My $.02

We've run into some issues with head gaskets on 15-17 blocks for whatever reason. I do know that one of the head studs is smaller diameter in the 15-17 blocks and needs to be upgraded. On the s550 we have that makes like 1430 wheel we ended up going to an 11-14 block with the cometic gaskets and so far so good.

Another option is a Boss 302 short block. Just installed one in my car. The pistons are the weak link in the S550 short block. The Boss has forged pistons.

So we're going with the 15 block with arp head studs and cometic gasket. I also may be the 1st person with a new power adder for the s197. So stay tuned.
