Just get a shop that knows what they are doing to build you one that is custom with quality parts. Have had a 170A in mine for a few years now - from a place local to me - zero problems. Even had them put a spare one together for me just in case, but it's been sitting in the box with nowhere to go. Price was right as well. No need to buy in to the highs and lows of the rest.

Lots to read here: Terminator "Alternator 101"

Or here: Electrical

Yup that’s what I did too. Had my stocker rebuilt locally to 170A and it ran great. No problems and it was just over $100 bucks to do.

Nations, like Brady said, is a good choice. You can definitely have a shop build you a custom one, but choosing a quality shop with a proven build record is a must. There's a reason why many custom alternator shops have failed. They frequently run into quality issues that result in unit failures, and sooner or later their business drops off and they drop out.

Going forward, it helps to keep your alternator cool, by routing cool air onto the alternator. Excess heat is a contributor to alternator failures.

I have a nations... I've not had good luck thus far... I don't want to bring them into the convo as their customer service is top notch and they deserve a good reputation for that but so far I can't keep this thing alive and I don't have any crazy current draws on my car

I have a mechman and am happy with it. Ive heard bad things about j2fab. Theres a guy that sells 3g alternators on Facebook with lifetime warranty.

I have a J2fab, but with less than 1k on it i'm not sure I could give you a lot of useful feedback in terms of longevity.

It does come with "cut to length" wiring, which is nice. From my research, they seem to hold up to the other popular alt's (Mecham/Nations).

Think you’ll hear failures and success stories with any of them.

Personally, I wish I had a quality shop available locally to rebuild a spare that I have.

I was thinking Nations for my next alternator. That's the one with the separate voltage regulator right? But for what it's worth I have a stock alternator I rebuilt with an upgraded stator and regulator I picked up from a place online. It works decently enough. But it needs to be spun a little more to work better at idle. I had to bump my idle up to 850 and I have a smaller pulley on the alternator. The lights still dim a bit at night when I'm at a light. But once I rev it everything comes up nice and bright.
