Ill go through my issues with both recently. One my wife owns and one my brother in law owns.

2015 Edge Sport:
1. First truck we bought had a recall and buy back due to mold from body sealing issues. Ford gave us a fully loaded version for an even swap.
2. New Edge Sport great until 28,000 mile and has oil pan leak. Motor replaced under warranty.
3. Replace rear brake pads at 30k miles. Frozen rotors to hub. Replaced rotors.
4. Sync 2 starting to act up and not recognizing the voice commands for the phone. A/C and radio talk to change still works good.
5. Tires are going to be replaced soon(at the wear bars) and the 265/40R21's are $1500 a set minimum for some cheaper tires.. A summer only tire set will run more than $2,000 without balancing. Expensive wheel/tire package for a $48k SUV. The 20" option was the better choice for this.

2013 Grand Cherokee Laredo:
1. BIL bought it brand new from dealer. Brought it home and went back the next day for CEL on for catalytic converter. Replaced cat under warranty.
2. 3k miles in and he gets another CEL for catalytic converter failure. Replaced cat under warranty.
3. Recall for brake calipers. Replaced all 4 calipers and out for 2 weeks.
4. Recall for headliner. Also recall for fuel pump.
5. Recall again for headliner and sun visors.
6. Recall for ABS module. Out for more than a month waiting on parts.
7. 15k mile and CEL for catalytic converter failure. Replaced cat again under warranty.
8. Recall on engine for wrist pin failure. Extended warranty on engine to 10yrs/150k miles. BIL happy.
9. Transmission started slipping at 22k miles. Brought in, reprogrammed and returned. Issue went away.
10. ABS light at 35k miles. Replace ABS module under warranty.
11. Recall again for headliner, fuel pump and sun visors. 55k miles.
12. Replaced wheel bearings in front for noise. Also replaced EVAP purge valve for intermittent code. Has not come back. 57k miles.
13. Fuel pump causing start/stop issues and idle miss. Replaced again. 60k miles.
14. Seat motor up/down adjustment stopped working. Replaced. 90k miles.
15. Currently truck is at 115k without any more issues. We think the fuel pump is acting up once in a while again as he continues to get a stutter/idle fluctuation when coming to a stop.

The Jeep has caused more problems then it is worth. He is going to drive it until the 150k mile mark and dump it.

Have they came out with a revised water pump for the N/A edge’s? I see those go out all the time. Scary not knowing coolant is running into the oil pan.

Kevin, great info, thanks.

FJohnny, yes, I have a smart phone, but it wasn't designed to launch rockets. I am, however, getting the pitch from sales that it is a capable offroader. I don't know know too many people that take $50,000 out on the trails.

I'm also not too keen on the styling. Jeep has fallen into the same predicament as BMW. Front grill has to have that "iconic" look. After awhile, it just looks old and tired IMO.

I guess you can get good or bad of any vehicle. I'm just hoping we can avoid major issues.

What the heck kind of tires are you looking at? You can get a set of Pirelli Scorpion AS tires installed for less than $1000. Roll the dice on off-brand tires and be half that.

BTW, any of you that purchased GC's, did Chrysler's reputation for poor build quality become a factor for you before your purchase? Why or why not?
Half of the consumer reports complaints on new vehicles are completely useless. Half bitching about infotainment systems (uConnect is better than any sync product BTW). Just like safety ratings. Half the low ratings are because cars don't have all these auto safety features. Who gives a shit rate a car based on actual safety. You don't need auto parking, auto stopping, blind spot, pedestrian detection, put the ****ing phone down and learn to drive.

No, he's right. We've got an Edge sport with 22"rims. Came with pirellis and they were junk. We ended up with Michelins. Pretty pricey but worth it.

We have the 20’s on our Sport. Tires were 640 mounted and balanced. It has 35,000 miles on it. The only real issue we’ve had is the airbag seat belts in the back have acted up when pulling them all the way out to lock in a car seat.

Looked at a number of SUVs back in October of 2016 and settled on a 2016 Edge Sport. Never have regretted it. No issues. It's as quiet today as it was when I bought it. I really didn't want 3rd row seating because it would never be used. My Edge has plenty of interior room and trunk area storage. Love it so much that I'm planning on replacing it with a 2019 or 2020 Edge ST.

2 generations old, but our 2010 Edge Limited has 160,000 miles, essentially trouble free. It ate a couple batteries early on, but other than maintenance, pads, and tires I haven't had to touch it. Got almost 80,000 miles each on two sets of the factory 20" Pirelli's.

That all said, I don't think I'd buy a brand new one as they depreciate terribly. Now, for us, it didn't really matter. We knew we were in for the long haul. However, it was a little depressing seeing the value at half after 3 years on a $36,000 car.

I like the looks of the GC, but I think I'd always get an Edge over the Jeep. I'm a Ford guy. ;)

Sorry but the JG is wayyyy better. Ford needs to drop the 5.0 in it already, if they did already I would have never bought my RT Durango.

Does Ford still put the damn water pump inside the engine? Know of more than one engine failure because of a WP failure leaking coolant inside the engine.

What an absolutely stupid ass design.

Jeep wins cool factor. People hear you have one and will automatically assume you are better looking, more adventurous and having more fun in life than they are.

When people see your Edge they recognize it as an all new model. (The Jeep when new looks a lot like one 10 years ago). Your Edge has obviously been recently bought new. People now know you are richer and therefore likely smarter than them.

So, a lot of your choice depends on how you wish to to be perceived by others. Both vehicles look great and will likely drive beautifully so you may have to go into the more subjective area of self image to help you make the final pick.

I saw a couple of new Rangers on the street a few weeks ago. One dolled up with a rack to hold an outrigger canoe. I'm not a truck guy but I have to admit they stopped me in my tracks. Best and sportiest looking truck I've seen in some time. I actually crossed the street to see what kind of truck it was and looked them up later online. Only wish they could be had with the 3.5 eco.

Ha ha. As a percentage of the total off road vehicle owner pool, the proportion of owners that fully use their vehicle's capabilities will be far closer to 0 than 100. By a ton. But you and everyone around you know you could if you wanted to. And that makes the Jeep owner damn cool. He's not a poser. He's just a guy with a lot of untapped potential.

Look at it from a different angle. I don't know you but I'm willing to bet you have a shiny smart phone in your pocket right now. It has more computing power than what they used to land a man on the moon. I don't think you are a poser because you aren't firing off rockets. I think you're cool because your phone is nicer and newer than mine.

I hauled a moose (bow hunted) out of the bush with my grand cherokee. My brother hauled a whitetail out with his Macan Turbo. He's the poser. I hope he reads this. F you, bro. You poser.

We've spent the better part of a day driving both. The 2019 Edge is a great improvement over our 2013.

When it came right down to it, the wife eliminated the GC based on 1 thing. Huge blind spot when she is turning left. She absolutely hated it. Headed to buy the Edge tomorrow.

I’d wait on the ST. I think there is kinks to work out with the new trans vs the proven 6 speed auto that sits in the SHO, fusion sport, edge sport and explorer sport.

I have a 2017 GC Altitude which was well under 40k. I also have a loaded Explorer Sport. For a low optioned vehicle I would go with the Jeep. I think Ford offers better deals on their fully loaded models. Uconnect blows Sync away. The 8 speed in the Jeep is great and there is a ton of leg room. Don't have an Edge so can't comment on that, but there is a lot I like about my Explorer also.
