When Honda wants $1500 for a 50cc dirt bike, you call China!

I'm not speaking on the subject without experience. There's a reason CL and FB market place is littered with 1-2 year old Chinese dirt bikes and atvs for $50-100.

There's also a reason people pay $500-600 for 15 year old Honda and Yamaha 50s.

One redeeming factor is that the engines are knockoffs of the tried and true Honda design...but everything else around it is garbage.

These aren't a bad way to go when it comes to youth sized dirt bikes, quads, as the name brands like Honda, Kawasaki etc are astronomical in price. Kids are going to outgrow these quickly and then your stuck trying to sell the damn thing at 1/3rd of what you paid for it. Any decent DIY guy can keep these Chinese bikes, atvs running well with a little sweat equity. When it comes to Honda, I'd only spend the money on the full size real deal and not piss it away on youth stuff.

Exactly. Are these El Cheapo throwaway bikes? Yes. Are they priced accordingly? Yes.

When i have kids and they want bikes or quads, they are getting one of these first to see if they like it. If not, dump it on CL for super cheap. All this talk of dirt bikes makes me want to look for a used KLR 650 though...

I have been wanting a CRF450R or KX450, but gdman these ****ers are 9K new, probably going to go used and save a little money.

I own two of them, total junk! Piston ring is toast on one and front suspension broke on the other. They do fine if you putt around but anymore than that don’t waste your money. Golden rule you get what you pay for, my dad bought me a 1988 Honda z50. Still runs to this day! Also have a 1988 Honda Odyssey, original motor as well. Buy something that will last in my opinion!

I have an SSR 110 dirt bike that I bought my wife 8 years ago as a pit bike to around the paddock when I was racing motorcycles. Beat the balls off that thing. I have jumped it, trailed it, even converted it to a mini motard for my wife to ride on the go kart tracks. Thing will not die!

I beg to differ. Japanese bikes don’t drop in value. If you buy one used you can use it for years and if you look after it sell it for the same price. I have done it many times over.
The Chinese toys literally fall apart.
My 2 cents...

I dont know why people buy 50's and 65's new when you can buy a used one, let your kids out grow it and then sell it for what you paid for instead of supporting these shitty chinese companie's garbage and losing money but whatever not my loss lol.

I was big into the pocket bikes, had like 6 of those damn things. Man talk about shitty electronics, the lights/blinkers would work for an hour if you were lucky.

I think it's a decision based on practicality and intended use. I for one, have been looking at the SSR110s for use as a pit bike and a very occasional blat on a dirt road. I have no expectation of superior quality; I'm looking for inexpensive transportation at the track for a handful of weekends during the summer as well as tooling around my neighborhood. Why pay 3 to 5x more for such limited use? I figure if the kids want to use it, I won't be too bothered when it comes back in pieces.

And where are ppl selling cheap Chinese bikes on Craigslist? I've continually looked for them in my area and the asking price isn't much different from a new one.

As ' Blackoyote ' noted above ^^^ This - don't you love your kids?? LOL Put them on any of the 4 Jap brands and not worry, rarely break down and parts (if needed) easy to get. They (China crap) are junk, I speak from experience with friends that tried them, 2 wheels and quads - all junk!!! I've raised my son on Yamaha TTR line, my brother, he raised his on Honda's CRF line - both bulletproof.

……...and here's the big difference, the Jap brands actually hold resale really well, your China junk - throw-away, good luck finding a buyer at a fifth of what it cost you to buy.

LOL...seriously guys...the quality is excellent...it's a tiny 1 cylinder, pretty hard to screw that up even if it's made in china. Honda/Yamaha and worse of all KTM is completely nuts charging what they do for a little 50cc dirt bike. Nuts.

There are many reasons why. KTM little overpriced though IMO

You only see the cheap brand new on C-list. If you want to find a used one try your local landfill and fight the possums for it

Used, maybe..... assuming you find a hell of a deal.

However, who wants to put their kid on someone else's 10 year old Honda? There is something to be said for shiny and new. Kids don't know any different and they will prefer a new China bike 10/10 times.

Used is used, new is new to any 5 year old.

If I had a kid that scoffed at getting a used yamaha 50 id smack him, take it away and tell him to start ballet class while I sign adoption papers

Right. Because at 5 they fully understand the depth of this thread topic.
