Has anyone compared these 2? The wife likes the Grand Cherokee, but I'm not excited to own a Fiat to be quite honest. The Chrysler/Jeep/Ram reliability index is always WAY below industry average. The only thing that they seem to have going for them is they drop the price so low, it's hard to turn down.

Opinions?

Which trims you looking at?
Looking for gas efficiency, or you want the sport/5.7L hemi?

My wife had a 2013 Edge sport. Flawless other than the damn emergency brake light in the dash would go off randomly. Never could fix that.
We actually wanted a GC with the 5.7L but the dealership wasn't taking us seriously for some reason so we went with the Edge.

My mom had a 2015 Edge sport. POS. Engine issues, electronic issues out the wazoo.
Sold that and got the nissan equivalent.

I've driven a 19 GC with the 3.6L. Lowly optioned, but it was still nice.

I've had an '04, '11, and '16 JGC Overland. Wife currently has an '18 Laredo.
All were V6 and we haven't had a single issue with any of them.
I cant say much about the Edge as Ive never owned one and dont know anyone that owns one.

Had a 18 GC as an enterprise rental last year and I was damn impressed with how nice that thing was. I think it was a limited with the luxury package and thats the first rental car I've had that I absolutely did not want to turn back in. I had a 14 ram I had no problems with, my mom has a 14 charger with no problems and my dad a 13 ram also no problems to report.

On the flipside when I was working as a service advisor for ford I had a 16 edge that was in every other week for a new issue. If I can remember off hand it was a 16 edge with 48K miles and at that point had 3 brake line failures, abs modulator failure, power steering rack failure, 2 wheel speed sensor failures, turbo charger failure, a/c compressor failure and oil leak from oil pan. Most of those happened after the 36k warranty was up.

Of course this is my personal experience I can't vouch for anyone else but its looking more and more likely that I will stray away from Ford and possibly towards CJDR for my next purchase. the grand cherokee is on my list but after looking at a durango at the auto show I think I prefer the extra room in the durango.

We have a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee. So far, we've not had a single issue (hope I don't regret those words). You get a lot for your money with the JCG. I think the interior is nicer in the Jeep vs the Edge.

I haven't followed the market for the Edge's but the value of the Jeeps drop like a rock. I'd have a hard time buying a new one vs one lightly used.

Get her a new Escape Titanium unless tou need the cargo space. I have a 15 and I love it. Zero issues in 50k miles. If I don’t get the 19 ranger I want I will be getting a 18 or 19 escape

Isn’t the Jeep more the size of the Explorer?

That being said we had a 13 edge with zero problems in 60k plus miles and now have a 16 edge with zero problems.

GC all the way. My wife loves hers. Have had 08, 11, 17 GC and all have been flawless. Currently have an Altitude trim with the 3.6 and it's been perfect. She liked the Edge but after driving both for several test drives she decided she wanted to stick with the GC.

Jeep wins cool factor. People hear you have one and will automatically assume you are better looking, more adventurous and having more fun in life than they are.

When people see your Edge they recognize it as an all new model. (The Jeep when new looks a lot like one 10 years ago). Your Edge has obviously been recently bought new. People now know you are richer and therefore likely smarter than them.

So, a lot of your choice depends on how you wish to to be perceived by others. Both vehicles look great and will likely drive beautifully so you may have to go into the more subjective area of self image to help you make the final pick.

If I don’t get the 19 ranger I want I will be getting a 18 or 19 escape

I saw a couple of new Rangers on the street a few weeks ago. One dolled up with a rack to hold an outrigger canoe. I'm not a truck guy but I have to admit they stopped me in my tracks. Best and sportiest looking truck I've seen in some time. I actually crossed the street to see what kind of truck it was and looked them up later online. Only wish they could be had with the 3.5 eco.

I'd have to disagree with the Jeep wins the cool factor. Most people around here that own a Jeep have never seen anything but blacktop. Bunch of posers.

Yes!

The Grand Cherokee is more off-road capable. The Edge gets a little better fuel mileage, depending on what model you get. I liked both radio interfaces about the same since Ford updated to SYNC 3.

Here was the big selling point for us on the Edge. There is so much more room than the Jeep! I am 6’4”, and I can comfortably sit in the front seat and back seat with no issues. It’s very comfortable. We own a 2016 Ford Edge Sport. It has plenty of power, the AWD is nice and it rides very nice. I wish it had the same off-road capability as the Jeep, but it doesn’t, oh well.

The cargo capacity is a huge plus on the Edge with two kids. We have two car seats, one forward facing, and the other rear facing which I have plenty of room in the front with them behind me in the car. Everyone who has rode in the back has loved it, especially the heated seats.

The one thing I don’t care for is the Sony stereo. It had great sound in our Fusion Titanium, but the Edge is a little lame. But all the pros far out weigh the cons.

BTW, any of you that purchased GC's, did Chrysler's reputation for poor build quality become a factor for you before your purchase? Why or why not?

Take those quality reports with a grain of salt. Not saying that you totally discount them, just use it as a data point, vs. determining factor. These reports often lack any real detail, and lump together entire brands. Most reports don't even differentiate between a minor issue and a significant one, such as a simple interior light failure vs. an engine failure.

There are horror stories for every car/truck out there.

Ha ha. As a percentage of the total off road vehicle owner pool, the proportion of owners that fully use their vehicle's capabilities will be far closer to 0 than 100. By a ton. But you and everyone around you know you could if you wanted to. And that makes the Jeep owner damn cool. He's not a poser. He's just a guy with a lot of untapped potential.

Look at it from a different angle. I don't know you but I'm willing to bet you have a shiny smart phone in your pocket right now. It has more computing power than what they used to land a man on the moon. I don't think you are a poser because you aren't firing off rockets. I think you're cool because your phone is nicer and newer than mine.

I hauled a moose (bow hunted) out of the bush with my grand cherokee. My brother hauled a whitetail out with his Macan Turbo. He's the poser. I hope he reads this. F you, bro. You poser.
