My wife has like 40k left...she started a hair north north of 100k in loans.

Uncle Sam paid for my degree...thankfully

It's silly how much school costs...and for what? A damn safe space and shitty lab gear that's 30 years old?
Its a choice.

Maybe You Tube should offer a free College degree program.

You might be joking but there's a lot of truth in your comment. I Youtube everything I ever need to fix in life. From dishwasher, dryer and the like to the install of my Whipple kit. It has worked every time and saved many $thousands.

I guarantee that if you had appendicitis on a desert island and I had youtube, a bottle cap, some duct tape and a ball of yarn I could save your life.

Go Youtube!

All the best. And maybe just avoid desert islands just in case.

The wife has a chunk, but after another year of work her job will pay so much of hers back and they will pay full ride for her to get her nurse practitioners license

Its a choice.

What kills me is they go to these schools and get bullshit gender studies or sjw degrees and complain that no one will hire them when they show up looking like shit and uneducated.

100k in loans for a piece of paper listing 400 damn genders aint gonna pay them loans.

You may just want to hold off. The new girl, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, announced that part of her presidential bid in 2020 will include a pledge to forgive all student debt and make future education free.
With any luck, you and your wife could be off the hook altogether.
spoken like a true live of the teet of government lazy ass. she will not get the nomination and she will not get a second term IMHO. I am thinking of following her on twitter just so I can troll the **** out of her.

I will likely be paying student loans until the day I die. My girls will not have loans though. I feel as a parent that their education is my responsibility at this point.
my father made a deal if we wanted to go to college he would pay tuition and books, food, lodging, and spending money was on us.

Has she really said something about a run in 2020? If so, add another dumbass statement to her laundry list. Guess she doesn't know you have to be 35 years of age to run for POTUS.
she has said that only applies to men. just shows what a stupid **** she is

Not a chance. Education is not something I encourage anyone to gamble with. College is not negotiable for either of my children.
of everything I have read from you this is about the only thing I think you are 100% wrong on. College is not for everyone and everyone is not cut out for college. Some people learn more and do better at a technical school or figuring life out the hard way.

My personal view is you signed a contract when you signed for your student loan. to drop it without paying or delaying payment hoping to get loan forgiveness makes you a thief plain and simple. because you borrowed money on false pretenses.

want to avoid college debt? live at home while going to the local community college to get your core requirements out of the way. then go to an in state school for the rest of your degree. I have zero sympathy for anyone that has student debt that didn't do it this way and insisted on going out of state.

I think there might be quite a few things Ocasio-Cortez is unaware of.......how can someone so uniquely unqualified get elected? Strange times indeed.

Big +1 on that. Unfortunately, it's terrible how much school debt a kid can rack up. It seems to me that a lot of the best might just opt out and not bother with university. Not saying they can't succeed without it but there are some opportunities where a degree gives credibility and opens doors. I hate the idea that we waste potential in any kid just because they are not born into money. I hate even more that a smart and hard working kid can do all the right things and upon graduation owe the equivalent of the value of a house.

We are pretty fortunate here. Education is not free but it's pretty heavily subsidized. Enough to make the parents and kids value it but not enough to stop very many from attending university if they qualify and are accepted. I'm not big on government running much at all but I can sure get behind it where it comes to education. A better educated and trained population lifts the entire society.

As a comparison, we had some friends visit from Norway. They couldn't believe how much a Canadian university education cost. Their kids were FULLY covered even down to room and board when living away from home. They could not believe our kids had to pay anything and that some could potentially owe money at the end of it. And when they heard that many American kids paid 4 or 5 times what ours cost they almost crapped themselves. One extreme to the other I guess.

Hope they cancel all your loans. Good luck.
Both of my children are considered gifted. They are extremely smart, and take more advanced classes than I knew was available. The same is true for my niece headed to med school.

My oldest daughter is running behind in settling down and applying to a few colleges. I personally want her to attend UGA, but she isn't interested for some reason. I think she wants to attend a local college for a couple years to knock her core classes out, then transfer to a larger university. I'm fine with that, but it isn't a choice I would make.

My youngest is already looking at schools, and is ready to go to college.

The internet has been around long enough that education cost should be falling like a rock. The only greedy capitalists that get a pass is Big education. The government should change the game and allow proficiency and competency to be tested and rewarded in the work place. The idea that the only smart and capable people are those that sat in a college or hold a degree is pure bullshit.

That’s awesome. I can’t remember, but does she work at a hospital or?

And how the hell does one have student loans for 17 years and still plan on paying it for another 10? IIRC my wife’s loan payments are calculated to pay off in 10 years.

State funded hospital making more than my ignorant ass has ever made. The push is for more education so the state of Texas is paying to see it happen.

If that’s the case I’ll pursue a doctorates in Mechanical engineering.

Plan is to start college soon. As several members of my family are pestering me to go; and where I want to work, it would also help to have a degree in mechanical engineering. Probably would be considered blasphemous from some people here.

What happened to personal accountability? People took the money and entered into a contract for repayment.

Now they are hoping for a taxpayer bailout.

The greatest generation must just be rolling over in their graves.

This doesn’t bode well for our future as a country.

Paid mine off 2 years after graduating.

I’m sorry but these days you’re a moron if you go to a 4 year university for anything other than a STEM degree.

I see so many millienials 100k in debt with a useless degree and 4 years behind their peers with no skills. Waste

Go to a trade school and actually learn a useful skill in under a year and make good money.

What trade schools? There are countless stories of trade schools (namely automotive or medical assistant etc) being just as if not more expensive than universities.

B) an even lower number is mentally capable.

Ummmm.....can I change my answer?

I do think people should pay off their own damn loans.

My personal view is you signed a contract when you signed for your student loan. to drop it without paying or delaying payment hoping to get loan forgiveness makes you a thief plain and simple. because you borrowed money on false pretenses.

What happened to personal accountability? People took the money and entered into a contract for repayment.

Oops. After spending over the last 25 years teaching my 3 kids about personal responsibility and having them accept and live those lessons so well I come out with that really dumb comment. I think Ocasio-Cortez is a naive dope with no idea about the real world. And I'm pretty sure I just came off sounding like her twin brother.

Sorry about that.

I believe that anyone who took the loans should have had all the facts and should live with the results of their decisions. How crazily unfair would it be to every taxpayer who didn't send their kid to college due to cost and all those others who actually paid off their loans if the rest of the loans were now forgiven. Unjust, unfunded and really dumb.

I may have gotten bogged down and misspoke because I also believe that it is not okay for some rich guy's kid get all the opportunities in education simply because of birthright. I don't begrudge the rich kid getting to go despite being lazy and unqualified. The rich guy earned it for his kid. But the poor kid who works his butt off and achieves excellence deserves an equal chance. It is flat out wrong that he lose that chance because he had the wrong mom and dad. I'm proud of my three girls who were born into lucky circumstances and yet still worked hard, excelled and earned scholarships to fund their way through university. But I quite happily pay pretty high taxes to ensure that other deserving kids won't miss the chance.

Anyway, sorry to sound like a supporter of deadbeats and welchers. I screwed up.

All the best.

All of those are highly dependent on the MOS/AFSC you get. Plus you’re looking at a 4 year commitment (there are exceptions). As someone in a high demand AFSC that hates it...I could put my nose to the grinder and get certs and schooling that will net me 6 figures on the outside. But, I hate the job, hate the environment of said job. So not going to do it on the outside unless I have to to make ends meet. There are thousands in the AF that wish to be in my “predicament”.
