How tall are you? IIRC you are in your 20s and I had trouble gaining during that decade of my life as well. Weights are your best bet along with forced feedings. Remember: It's easier to drink 1000 calories(protein shake) than it is to eat it.

True. But I think a good two or three day a week full body routine with extra calories would be a good beginning.
I would not want him drinking his protein just supplementing it in between meals.
Three solid meals or more per day every day plus three smaller meals everyday. Depending on his appetite this could be harder than the actual training.

Depends where he is physically.

I personally do not like full body routines but they work for some to a point.
I would start him with the very basics of weight training. Lots of compound movements and mid section training every training day to reduce back injuries.
The mid section ie the area around the belly button is the weakest part of the human body. It must be strengthened.

I meant the protein shakes as a supplement. I agree with the compound movements. He needs to fall in love with squats. They are the best weight gaining exercise there is. As for the full body routines...I think they are good for novices. Two or three days a week. To each his own.

My goal is to be a better person. This is perhaps the most difficult goal to achieve
You need more sleep to accomplish that, bruddah.

Mine is what it was last year: Gamble less, drink less. I've controlled my gambling down to just twice a month with a 200 dollar limit each time. I've pared my alcohol intake from 7 days a week down to three or four.

Be debt free (again) next week, continue socking back cash in prep for retirement in a few years, and putting cash back to make my last big ULTIMATE car purchase. Then I'm done.
Stable will be complete.

I’m 6’1, and i do 2 protein shakes a day currently. Just spent $400 on a shitload of food, i gotta stretch my stomach out. That’s the hard part. Then sticking to eating like crazy.
Protein shakes are good, but don't make it the stable for your macro needs. Generally I use protein shakes if I'm falling short on my protein intake. The best nutrients come from whole foods.

I want to gain as much weight as possible.

Working out
Eating right

Wanna get @BrunotheBoxer big

I’m 135-140 now. I would love to be 175, then 200, then 250....

I want people to go ‘Jesus christ’ When i walk in....
I started that journey a few years ago, started at 135 and am hanging around the 180s now. I too am looking to get to the 200 range. My advice, get the baby wipes ready because you’ll be consuming large amount of calories if you have always had troubles with gaining.

Plenty of people utilize them as a staple to hit macro needs. It absorbs just fine and is far easier for cramming in cals and cost effective vs just relying on meat sources. At least for the first while as someone is getting used to ramping up their caloric intake.

Obviously with diet it will differ from one individual to the next and it depends on their caloric needs along with their appetite.

Depends. I never feel "full" after a shake. I guarantee Arnold was eating more whole foods vs protein shakes.

But we can start a new thread for this debate. :)

It’s not about satiety it’s about micronutrients intake and meeting total caloric needs, in this case being in a surplus. If someone can consume all they need from solid sources by all means do it, but chances are he can’t eat the amount he’ll need between carbs and protein at least while he first starts lifting.

Personally I like to consume all my protein in solid source and I’ll do a lot of liquid carbs when bulking.

I’m just saying protein shakes are plenty viable too.

It’s poor advice.
I won’t debate it or argue with you. You can even have the last word.
Out.

I've never made a new year's resolution. I personally think it's dumb. Like hey, I'll wait until next year to my life better.

Some people treat it that way to feel better about bad habits. "I'm going to lose weight after Jan 1st, so I'm going to eat myself into oblivion until then!" In those cases, I agree with you, it's kinda dumb and self-defeating.

The universe doesn't know the difference between 12/31 and 1/1, or it doesn't care.

I like using it as a means to close a chapter. I'm sure everyone on here is sick of hearing me say that 2014-2018 have been hell for my family and I (especially 17/18, screw these past two years). I want 2019 to be different, and I'm aligning everything to make that happen, everything that is within my control at least. I want to look back at this post a year from now and say "wow, we did it."

2018 has been a F'd up year and I'd just like to get back on my feet, get organized, and start working out again.

We can start another thread or you can expand on why you feel it’s poor advice. I won’t sit here and say I’m the only one that could be correct.

I’m always open to hearing about people’s diet approach and why, as that’s how people find what works best for them.

I’m down 15 pounds from last year...and would like to lose another 15 by the end of 2019.

Keep paying down the mortgage...want it paid off in 3-4 years. Keep investing for retirement.

Finish the work on my ‘66 (fuel cell, cage) to make it track ready.

Make it through the year without telling certain coworkers off.

Spend more time on SVTP.

The standard stuff for me - drink less beer, workout more, be the best husband I can be but also be the best (new) dad I can be as we are expecting a son in April.

Also, be more positive about my job or find another one.
