Removing stock lower pulley

I have the engine out and on a stand and didn't think to remove the lower while it was In the car.
I've been trying to remove the stock lower all day. I've been through a couple 14mm sockets, tried map and propane, impacts, and cheater bars and and have done nothing but snap sockets.

Do you guys have any idea on how to get it out?

The lower is reverse thread.....

You can put a pipe on one of the spokes of the pulley and hit it with a good size sledge hammer. A quick hit will sometimes break it free.

Remember, reverse thread for the stock lower. The actual crank bolt is normal righty tighty lefty loosy.

Yeah I found out it was reverse thread through a couple videos before the first attempt.

I'm definitely going to try the pipe and sledge and see how it goes.

Now you know why changing the lower isn't done that often. It's usually a royal pain in the butt. Let us know how you make out.

also. are you holding from flywheel, not thru a spoke
No I was holding it with a pry bar with the flywheel bolts against the engine stand.

But I finally got it a pry bar 4 sockets 2 breaker bars and 3 ratchets later by bracing a jack under the harmonic balancer so the stand didn't flex
and a 5 ft cheater bar it finally popped!

Hoping Matco will warranty my ratchets and pry bar.

There is always eBay. Found mine for cheap there. When the flywheel is locked solidly, the pulley comes up much easier making the tool was worth it no matter what.

Hi,
I have a question. If it's this difficult to remove the pulley, how can someone change the inner belt? I read that you have to remove the pulley to change the accessory belt.

Per the Ford service manual, there is a special tool that locks the flywheel. It’s a cinch if you use it.

While thats a nice tool and I'd love to have one its not a "cinch" with something locking the flywheel. When I pulled my motor I still had the lower on it and it was tough to get off with a home built flywheel stop. I used a 1" impact that delivers 1000+ftlbs of torque and the lower didn't move, I then resorted to a breaker bar, 6ft cheater pipe, that I hit with a hammer as I sat on the end of it, before it finally popped.

It's all in the service manual. It's been downloadable for years: SVT Documents

Guess some of us get lucky. Mine came off with a breaker bar and the tool holding the flywheel in place.
