Driving my new hand me down from the wife. 2012 f250 crew cab 6.2 auto today. Look in the rear view mirror, and it looked like I was crop dusting! Pull over and open the door to the fragrant smell of burning tranny fluid. Look under the truck to see a puddle of trans fluid. Coast the truck away from the puddle for a quick look.

WTF! Broke right off! This could be catastrophic for the tranny, however I'm hoping for the best.

If I remember correctly. There was a service bulletin on the cooler lines. It’s been a few years since I worked at the dealer but I do remember having to inspect a lot of them.

I've had several come in my shop in the last couple of months with the exact same problem. Just another on the long list of manufacturing defects.

Usually the transmission loses line pressure quick enough that component wear doesn't start.

Oh wow, that IS a terrible design.

They should have left a gap in between the surfaces of the outer shells where the two butt together. Having them butted together like that results in stress cracks of the inner tube due to the butted ends prying against each other as fulcrums. The final result is shearing like you found out.

Negative, that would be burnt up gear oil with friction modifier.

Good god. I spilled some in my old Toyota truck. It took months of cleaning to get the smell out.

Good luck OP. I'm going to check that on my truck too. Does anyone know what I should be looking for when I inspect it? 2012 F250 6.2.

I was fortunate. The truck went out near a shop I helped build out. He towed and has it fixed already. Trans is fine. I'll look at the old parts and get back. Hopefully a ford tech can chime in for you.
