So, WTF? Is there a such thing as a spray on, rinse off wheel and tire cleaner that actually works on brake dust, etc.?

I went through a bottle of mothers, and I swear, each time I tried it, it disappointed me. There was always residual brake dust on the wheels, or the tires didn't get clean.

OTC stuff is trash. So far I’ve had really good results from Adams Wheel Cleaner. Smells terrible with a hint of popcorn, but it gets the job done.

Most OTC products your spray on snd hose off are the equivalent of spraying a high powered jet of water on the wheel. The results are the same except you paid for the wheel cleaner products. The best I’ve used is P21S. Its pricey, but works.

Try Sonax wheel cleaner. It can effectively remove dirt and brake dust.

Sonax wheel cleaner.
All of their products are absolutley BS, worthless crap.
But their wheel cleaner is excellent.

I don't know how, or why, but it's great. I've had many other wheel cleaners that has been way too aggressive. One even stripped the paint off my brake discs. Fortunately not my BBS wheels as they were probably 100 times better painted than those discs but still, it stripped the paint off.

I have yet to find anything that works well when simply sprayed on and rinsed off, especially if wheels aren't ceramic-coated and/or are really dirty. That said, I get good results with Adam's Wheel Cleaner and a little agitation.

Get a steam cleaner. I bought this model off eBay for $130 and its the best thing Ive bought in a long time. It seriously will do it all and with ease; interior, exterior, engine bay and things around your home.

I used it on brake dust caked wheels on my 99 Explorer and they look like new again. It did take about an hour for each wheel, but there was nothing that was getting off years and years of brake dust with just a spray and a power washer. The wheels looked black and now they shine again.

I used it on the wheels on my Mustang that had light brake dust (from being lazy and not cleaning the car for a month of so). The wheels were clean within a few minutes.

EDIT: Its not letting me put a url in here for some reason but the model is a McCulloch MC1375.

If you're looking for a pretty decent OTC wheel cleaner, Griot's Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner is pretty good and available at some auto stores. Spray on, give it a little dwelling time then agitate and rinse off. Don't let it dry in the sun, though.
