I have been searching for a while and can't find a solid answer. I flushed the coolant, but not sure what the hell color it was, its so damn dirty but I think more gold than green. I think it was done by my brother while I was overseas a few deployments ago but who knows if he put the right stuff in there. So anyhow I flushed the crap out of it and now pure water. So should I just go with gold to be safe? It was build in May of 2002. Plus is there anywhere to get it besides a dealer? Tried orielys, autozone, and napa with no luck. thanks yal.

if you flush the whole system (including heater core), you can use whatever you want. i'd go for the universal kind.
Yeah I flushed the hell out of it, drained the radiator, brass plug out of the block etc, refilled with water and did this 3 times after running, just getting water now. So what kind is that? Motorsport gold or some other stuff?

No . What I do is . I drain all the coolant . Fill up with water and run til temp up . Drain it out and fill up with water again. Run til temp up . Drain it out . Fill up with water . Follow this step til water came out same color as you fill in . Clear

. Last step is fill up with Preston’s ( not the 50/50 kind ) then fill the rest with distilled water .

yes.

antifreeze, no matter the color, only does two things: lower the freezing point of the coolant and lubricate the water pump.

i don't like using distilled water in the engine. distilled water is corrosive and will leach metal ions into the coolant until equilibrium is reached. drinking water is better because it has some minerals in it but as long as you don't have really high mineral levels in your tap water, it will work fine.

Use whatever universal long-life coolant you like, preferably something that will always be easily available in the future. I keep a 5 gallon water cooler jug in the shop filled with reverse-osmosis filtered drinking water for mixing coolant. With R.O, most of the minerals and bad stuff have been removed but not to the point of distilled water.

From the FAQ:

“Early 2003 Cobras came with green color ethylene glycol coolant. Second run 2003 Cobras and all 2004 Cobras came with the gold color ethylene glycol coolant. The gold colored coolant is Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant. It is recommended that you use the gold Ford Premium coolant.”

Ford calls for Motorcraft coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water. You can get the coolant at a dealer or delivered by Amazon.

I just flushed/filled my 96. My Terminator is next.

Like Goose said, and from my Terminator FAQs, Ford recommends their Motorcraft Premium Gold, but any name brand coolant will work fine. So you bought Motorcraft Gold Premium?

A May 2002 build date would be green coolant I'd bet.

My car was built in June 2002 and it's the green stuff. I had the conversation with the parts counter guy at my local Ford dealer about this and how Ford changed the coolant part way through the 2003 model year. Not sure why though.

Not hard to find the information if you do some searching:

As long as you don't mix the coolants, you can use whatever brand you want. However, Ford recommends Gold. Gold actually replaced the green.

Don’t forget that unless you do a thorough flush, coolant remains in the system even after draining.
