Hi, just picked up a 97 Cobra and I seem to have an oil leak. It looks like the part that the oil filter attaches to has a little crack in the bottom. Can someone please tell me what that part is called?

sounds like the oil filter/oil cooler assembly.

If it has a big round piece above where the oil filter attaches it has a cooler, if not its just an adapter.

as long as its not cracked there are rebuild kits that replace the orings and gaskets. The other option being to delete it by running an adapter instead (no "cooler"). I actually have one off a Mark VIII that should work if you go that route

Thanks for the reply. Yeah it looks like it has a small crack at the bottom. So it's ok to run no cooler? How much would you want for your adapter? Thanks again for your help.

was gonna PM you but you dont have enough posts yet. I havent seen any reason you cant delete the cooler but feel free to do some searches on that.

Get a few more posts so I can PM you but I bought this one used on Ebay and ended up not using it. I think $50 shipped would make me break even on it. or I guess I can start a for sale thread and link you to it as well...Ill try to do that later tonight

Don't delete the oil cooler, it's there for a reason. The engine was designed with it to cap maximum oil temperature.

I'm not trying to step on any toes, but I have one for sale in the engine/drivetrain section if you're interested.

That's the weep hole. It could be all you need to do is tighten the hollow stud that holds it all together. It comes loose sometimes when the oil filter is removed. Or the seals have gone bad.

What he said. When I first bought my Mystic it was leaking a softball size puddle of oil every time I started it. I drained the oil and took the filter off, tightened the stud back down, put a new filter on, added fresh oil, and no more oil leak.

Same thing happened to me years ago. I took the filter off, unscrewed the pipe/stud and went to Ford for some orings. They have kits there. Got 2 of the proper size it it back together. Some extra oil and all was well.

FWIW, mine was just loose, but I put new orings on it anyway...
