Just wondering if you have a modded car and it gets totaled what do you do?
For example a built engine with supercharger and the car gets totaled but no damage to the engine.

depends on your insurance company, and how you have the vehicle insured.

Most insurance companies will cover some modifications, my policy has $5000 worth of aftermarket coverage default on the policy (covers my American Forces and lift if it gets ****ed up)

However, when my 1st mustang got totaled, I had to send in receipts for all the parts I put on it to get reimbursed, and the agent said they really shouldn't be doing it without having the modifications insured as part of the policy (so they get their money up front for covering the parts)

Its best to be honest with your insurance company about the modifications and price you paid for them, if you want that peace of mind. Otherwise you roll the dice of them not being covered.

That make sense, and answer your question?

If you're asking if you can get the engine out if the car is totaled, no. The entire car belongs to insurance once they write you the check. You can buy the car back for parts off of it, but keep in mind what they paid you, they likely wont take less than that, after all its a business.

I thought if you have receipts, you will get some money back, not all of it obviously.

With traditional insurance you are hosed. If the mods are significant then you can recoup by buying the car back (usually very very cheap) and parting it out. In 2004 I bought back my totaled 1995 SHO worth $6k for $200.

Gotta read your policy, most will cover up to X amount but it’s not a lot.

If you don’t have an agreed value policy best case you can hope for is to buy it back and strip it then scrap the chassis.

Granted this was the mid 90s a friend had a built motor turbo car. He convinced the insurance company to let him have the car a few days to get all his shiny show car stuff off. He dropped in a stock driveline and pulled out all his good shit over a weekend

That shit wouldn't fly now...I just went through this last year with my 03 10th anny 2.3 whipple car...

They paid me for the car Thursday afternoon, and Friday morning the car was picked up from the tow yard and taken to copart, sold for $16k wrecked as hell I think. Someone ripped the mirrors off between the tow yard and copart too.....

Agreed value ins. Some companies will do it on newer cars, some won't.
My 13' Shelby is too new to apply. The rest of my cars, 03's & 04's qualified.

my car was too new under a lot of the programs but Hagerty also has something for modified cars which is whats under mine

My father didn't have anything special insurance wise on one of his trucks.
It had a KB/built internals, and other stuff. Was totaled value wise but wasn't in bad shape.
Insurance didn't up the value due to the mods that, and I guess assumed he wanted the payout without giving him an option to keep the truck.
Got a call from the Ford bodyshop that some tow truck was going to take the truck right then and there. Declined that and fixed it up out of pocket.
Long legal battle ensued over value+diminished value.

Depends on insurance. The book value of my cobra is like 14k but it was appraised at 26k. My Insurance will only go off the book value. So if my car gets totaled then I’m stripping before they pick it up. Did that with my old 97 cobra. Hydro locked it and insurance totaled it. It was either 5k totaled or they give me 2k and I buy the car back for 3k. So I took the 5k and took the wheels, shifter, spoiler, gauges, intake and anything else worth anything off the car before they picked it up.

Pretty much what I feared, it's a loss. I like the idea of sending the tow truck to the house to take the parts off. I can replace everything but the long block but that's a pretty big piece to be missing haha.

Interesting. I just bought a 1997 Ford Taurus project to be my daily driver. When its up and running, my Shelby will be weekend use only. Im planning some pretty good mods for it, and have been wondering how the hell to insure it properly.

Who do you guys recommend? I see Haggerty and Grundy mentioned. Any other good companies? Its currently full coverage, but Im thinking I like the more specialized insurance approach.

Many require you to declare it so they can rip you off more. Plus, most will not cover anything if it is damaged while racing or performing illegal activities (come to think of it, I don't know of any that would cover it)
