How to stuff a big blower under the stock hood?

So, has anyone tried to stuff a large displacement Whipple or KB blower under the stock hood? Im leaning towards one of the big boy blowers next year. I know I can get an aftermarket hood to fit the blower without doing anything to the mounts or K-Frame.

I would like to keep it stock looking. I have a set of KB 3/4" lowering mounts ready for install when I do my long tubes (Dynatech 1 7/8"). But Ive heard that 3/4" is as much drop as can be done to let the steering shaft get through the headers without breaking out the ball peen hammer.

I was thinking of notching the backside of the hood where it needs clearanced.

What have you guys done?

I had a Whipple 3.4L on my 2007. BMR k-member and lowering mounts. Hated it. Too much NVH and front end just never felt as solid/stable in corners as when stock. This is why I went Whipple 2.9L Gen 3 on my 2013 to retain stock hood w no tricks or issues. Love it! Making 780rwhp on 93 pump gas w mild TwinJet 67mm TB. Blower will support 900rwhp+ on built motor w cams and E85. Unless targeting 1100rwhp range don’t need the big blowers IMHO. VMP 2.65 or Whipple 2.9L Gen 3.

The newer KB 3.2LC may be an option for you. As far as I know, it retains the smaller 2.8 case, it has the Liquid Cooled feature which cools the front of the case and bearing area where the hot compressed air exits the blower and is not the longer/taller case of the 3.6LC KB. <<I'm pretty sure that those are the facts.......This would get you into a 3.0+ size blower, but still be in a smaller package for possible fit under your hood.

^^Just a thought, if the limited amount of reading I have done is correct......

If I did not already have a 3.6LC for future install, and a Super Snake hood, I would explore this option.

Just went through this myself. Tuner advised not to mess around with lowering motor, it is hard to get right and the car will not feel the same. Went with 4" cowl.

I’m with Streetpwr on this one. Buddy of mine has a big blower, lowering mounts and BMR K member. Way too much NVH for a street car, even he isn’t happy with it. Now if you’re going for an all out race build, then don’t worry about it, but IMO just not pleasant on the street.

I know it’s going to add to the cost, but I would go with a cowl hood if I was moving to a big boy blower. It wouldn’t even be a question.

I’m going Gen3 2.9 Whipple this winter for that very reason. I don’t want to mess with the hood, and I don’t want to do the lowering mounts and K. It’s a compromise at this point, but it’ll make enough steam to be happy with. What are your goals, Ed? I know you’ve talked about building the engine at some point. Are you looking for over 1000hp?

BPS makes a lowering kit with spacers for the k-member and transmission mount. They claim it lowers the engine 3/4" which should fit under the stock hood. I have no personal experience with it.

lol I admit, Im one of those poorer Shelby owners. Ill be upgrading in stages. After talking to my tuner, Injector Dynamics and researching the shit out of return systems and ethanol, Ill be starting there first. Some of you may have noticed my posts around the forum about it and various setups. Every time, it all came back to a true return and injectors if I wanted to run the big boy blowers and NOT melt one of my pistons down, blow a hole in the block etc.

Im going greedy most likely going with a Kenne Bell 4.7LC :D . Same external dimensions as the 4.2LC. Would never be an option on strictly pump gas, but E54-E85 and a big pulley to keep boost reasonable is doable.

.... the greedy asshole in me wants to call Kenne Bell about the 4.9l lmao. Ive not heard a damn thing about it for GT500s. I know the hellcat/Demon ladyboys are getting their panties in a bunch about it. Here's the kicker: Kenne Bell has a 50 state kit available for it for our cars. How far on the ragged edge it is? eh Im not sure.

For the engine itself, Im comfortable with upgrading to Oliver rods and the timing system. I called Mahle Motorsports and was told by a knowledgeable fellow that the 11-12 pistons are the same set used in the Cobra Jet to about 1000 hp. Ill call and reconfirm, but I swear on my life that's what they told me.

As for hoods.... Part of me loves the Supersnake style hoods. The truefiber A53KR looks pretty cool. Then again the other part of me wants a simple CLEAN look like a Cervinis Cobra R hood. Does any one know if a knock off Shelby 1000 hood is in the works? The bulge looks a bit dorky, but I like how it looks stock if you don't know what it is. However, Im not paying nearly $2000 for a hood. lol

@1 Alibi 2 Was that JDM kit a full 1.5" lowering kit? After having notched your hood, would you say that the notching NEEDED the full lowering amount of the kit or was there another 3/4" to play with? Not afraid to cut the hood. Its a genuine Shelby hood, but not the one that came with my car.

Agreed, I like that hood, looks almost stock. Here's a decent deal on one, still fairly expensive, though..

2010-2014 Mustang Shelby 1000 Hood
I saw that! Lmao then I saw the price. Those boys in Las Vegas sure are proud of their products.... good lord! But it looks like great quality as does most Shelby American stuff.

I like the fact that Cervinis offers a prepainted option. $600 for just the hood seems like a killer price too. I recently found out my dealership group owns its own body shop. Ill have to give them a call for paint. Though, realistically the extra $500 Cervinis is asking for prepainted hoods isn't too shabby.

I have a 3.6–did the engine lowering thing and could not take banging my collectors into things anymore. I gave up and went back to stock height with Cervinis Cobra R. I have a feeling your best bet is actually to go with a 2650 under the stock hood. Although I’m not sure how it stacks up vs a bigger twin screw.

I will be able to tell you this in a couple of weeks. I went the other way - from 2650 to 3.6.

I went with cervinis 4." Did you pick cobra over this? I am worried that the cowl is going to be too much.

Yep that’s exactly why I went with Cobra R. I believe it is only 2.5”. From where I’m sitting, it has plenty of blockage as-is. I can only imagine the 4” would be kind of annoying. But then again, I also have a 10 point cage blocking part of my view out the front.

Cervinis Cowl or Shelby 1000 would be my top 2 choices. Though I still say Whipple 2.9L or TVS 2650 for solid 1000rwhp on built motor/E85. Let’s call those the max practical street blowers. For pure track use or competitive 1/2 mile or mile racing go big or go home!!

Not sure how much drop this kit provided, the hood was notched after it was installed as the hood would not close.

Yes, $2K is what that hood has been since it was first offered to the public. The sad thing is.............for $2K it is bare!! I would at least expect it to come with the heat extractor!

So after the purchase of the $2K S1000 hood, then the heat extractor, and then the fitment on the car and then the prep and paint.............I can't imagine what the "end investment" would be in that hood.

Two things that can be said.......The Shelby 1000 hood would be unique and the GT500 owner next to you at a car show will most likely not have that hood, or possibly any owner in your city, county or state.............and point number two............It is cheaper than the $23K (yes $23,000) that Shelby was charging for the original 2008/09 GT500KR Carbon Fiber hood back in the day when a GT500KR owner needed a replacement.
