Lead guitar players come in

Show me your pedal rig. I've been a player for 40 years. Since I was 8. I am from the generation of single effects pedals. Early 2000s, when the digital all in one pedal boards starting coming out, I gave up the pedals and thought I would like the boards better. I have used them all. Currently I have the Boss GT100. Its amazing, if you have a degree from MIT. They are crazy hard to learn and program. Been using it 6 years and still can't get that warm smooth sound I like. I guess its great for studio work, but Not for live playing, which is what I do Most.

So I am going back to pedals. Im a little out of date with the new pedal tech. Show me what you have and why.

I will need the following.
Distortion / overdrive
Delay
Chorus
Reverb
Volume pedal
Some sort of controller, I can use up to 20 presets each time i play live.

Will need to be full seperate left and right outputs.

Will be going into seperate mic'd small fender tube amps.

I play on a American Standard Aged Cherry Burst Fender Strat.

Boss - stompboxes

Been playing since I was 12, so its been 23 years now. Sadly its not very often anymore. Apparently life has a way of giving responsibilities.

I was a huge fan of the Boss products. Ran an MT-82 Metal Zone for a long time. The Chorus Ensemble was my most favorite effect, though who doesn't love a good Phaser or Wah. Dunlop Crybaby was fun, but I found myself screwing around more than being able to master it lol.

Good friend of mine had a Johnson Millennium (I think) 2x12 combo right out of high school. He absolutely loved that thing, though I could absolutely tell it was digital. Was a little cumbersome to program the included 2 foot pedal board, but once he had it all set up he was golden. Another friend had a Mesa Single Recto Rectoverb. Damn was that a great sounding amp.

As for me, Ive had more Gibson Explorers pass through my ownership than I care to remember. Mostly because I remember having to sell them for one reason or another. The best tone wise was a 2002 Gothic Explorer. Rarest was an all black 1984 Gibson Explorer with the James Hetfield control layout; no pickguard. Tone was a little flat, probably not mahogany but it looked bad ass.

My first Guitar was a 1995 Fender American Standard Stratocaster in the limited Edition Candy Apple Red with matching headstock. Great guitar, one of the best clean guitars around. As I transitioned to heavier music, I found I preferred Dual Humbuckers and set neck construction with a tune-o-matic bridge. I still have it and doubt Ill ever be able to sell it.

Best amp I ever owned was a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Tremoverb half stack. It was the series right before Mesa absolutely flooded the market with Dual and Triple Solo heads. It had literally the best tremolo effect Ive ever heard and the reverb was spot on. Couldn't ask for a better gain circuit either, though I admit the Peavey 5150 was a bit heavier. Had to sell it to fix my Shelby from a GTR that crashed into me at the track.

@CV355 is a lead player.

I am simple. I have an original Tube Screamer, delay, and the rest is all in my amp and guitars. I do lean heavily on a true spring reverb.

I have a Strat, Tele, ES335, and a Music Man Axis. I can cover anything I need with that.

I do have a multi effects pedal for a little more if need be.

...and my wah. I use that as much with bass as I do guitar. A volume pedal goes without question.

I keep it pretty simple now. 5150 III 60 watt 2x12 combo, a 535q crybaby, and the built in reverb, and occasionally I’ll hook something else up. I guess dragging all the extra stuff around influenced my decision. Initially I used an MXR Distortion +, electro harmonix holy grail, MXR Carbon Copy Deluxe, Boss digital reverb, M222 Talk box and the 535q on a Marshall TSL100 half stack. The EVH 5150 iii is a great amp for me. At low gain it responds very well, and you’re able to crunch it up by playing a bit harder, or clean it up doing vice versa. I’d also recommend the Dunlop 535q. This thing has lasted forever, and is flexible enough to cover a wide range of sounds, without the complexity of a digital one. I play with a Stratocaster, Telecaster, Gibson Les Paul Standard, and a Floyd Rose frankenstrat.

I switched to a Johnson Modeling amp.
If I do it again it will be a Marshall Code50 or the Fender mustang V
I would go back to pedals MAYBE if I played more often.

My pedal rig is simple:

Morley Volume -> Bad Horsie 2 -> Ibanez Tube Screamer (The real one)

Here were my previous rigs:
Peavey Valveking 100, Marshall 4x12 Celestion, Boss ME70
Sold all that
Engl Savage 120, Mesa 4x12, AxeFX2, Full Stack of EQ/Conditioners
Sold all that

Now I run strictly VSTs (Guitar Rig 5, Amplitube, LePou) through 75w Yamaha studio monitors. I have a few Schecters, PRS Custom 24, Martin, Takamine, Breedlove, and the most recent addition was a Mayones Hydra 7. I'm a standard tuning snob, but I also love Open C, Open Dm, Eb Standard... Not a big fan of drop tuning.

I'm all about organic reverb/echoes. Yeah I'm an effects guy, and I'll be the first to admit that too many use it as a crutch for sloppy playing. I turn the effects loop down drastically when learning or creating something, then crank it back up afterwards. I only really use the Bad Horsie as a treble boost for improv solos. The only time it goes higher than 20% is dual-hand tapping. It really accentuates the notes if you have it timed right- you can't just stomp away at the thing like you're Kirk Hammet or something.

This dude has been my inspiration for a long time (along with Loomis, Akerfeldt, Steven Wilson and Ihsahn). My "personal" sound is about 50/50 between DT and Loomis.

I know that feeling all too well. I used to be able to practice for 4-5 hours a night until my fingers were in pain. That was 10 years ago. Now I'm lucky if I get 45 minutes in.

I have a 50 watt Marshall jcm800 from 1983 that I play a Gibson Les Paul through. Chasing the John Sykes tone. Pedals I have are below:

I want another Fender Twin. Mine was stored at my uncle's home about 15 years ago. He had a house fire and the amp was toast.

I own my dads 1965 fender twin Blackface.
I only wish I had his 56 strat that was stolen many years ago.
He still plays at 75 years old but doesn't lug that heavy amp around anymore.

I had a 56 Les Paul gold top with the original case. It belonged to my dad. Some jerk wanted more than I did. It was stolen during load out after a show.

I've gone the opposite direction: I play a Chinese-made Fender Telecaster with Fender Custom Shop Texas Special pickups, through a Fender Champ clone I built from a Ted Weber kit. 5 Watts of single-ended fury. The sound I was looking for all my life, in the simplest rig. Gave away all the pedals.

The only other thing I am waiting on now is a Warmoth Tele neck with a 1&3/4 nut-width. My arthritic old fingers just have to have a bit more room between the strings, these days.

You can build a faithful recreation from a Ted Weber 6A80 kit. You do need some background in electronics, some soldering skill. But by no means do you have to be an electronics guru, if you're smart enough to know you need to discharge a cap before you touch it, you should be ok.

I have a little Fender Champ my daughter plays. Believe it or not, that amp has made a few recordings.

Art tube pre amp, into a tube screamer, into a delay, to a reverb pedal. Then an EQ is used with the Blues guitar of choice.

You can play a low volume and record big sound. It's awesome.

James, I would build one if a few things were different. Right now finances suck, and I have what I have my friend.

One day I will have a Fender Twin and a Dr Z.

Most of my rigs are bass related. I got involved with music production as a session bassist. I was a Hartke artist for a while. I actually have an 8×10 built to Jaco's specs. I also have a vintage 4×8 Ampeg. Then there is my 1×15 practice rig, Sansamp and Hartke DI pedals etc.

Most days I just jam on the ol Breedlove acoustic.
