As I've gotten older and started a family, the more I feel I need to be prepared to provide and protect them what ever the circumstance. Living in west TN, we don't have too many natural disasters besides the threat of tornado occasionally. I fear more than anything now the division of our country and I believe it's going to get nasty one day. With that being said, I just want a sense of security of being prepared for anything that may arise. If any of you guys would like to share any tips, methods, or what you do, I would like to hear about it. Maybe we can all learn some ideas from each other. Food, water, ammo, etc.

I'm always looking at the long shelf life foods that can be bought in the storage containers and wonder if there's a better alternative or where a good place to order from would be. And also what an adequate supply would be per person?

I think the most realistic wide spread threat is the next flu pandemic, it will be bad and we are due.

My advice while avoiding posting an entire dissertation would be this:

Plenty of food storage options out there, but if I could only choose one food, it would be Rice.

Vacuum seal it in quality bags or better yet can it.

Hunting, fishing, farming, and bartering are good skills to learn.

Reusable traps, archery and other primitive hunting skills are good to have.

Clean water is a necessity for life. It isn't hard to store 55 gal drums of water and recycle the water in garden usage.

Renewable / constant water sources are invaluable.

Antibiotics, ibuprofen, and other medicines are good to store.

I'm a hunter and fisherman that enjoys camping. I'm not worried about much, unless someone wants to take what I have. At that point act accordingly.

Your physical health should be your first prepping investment. If you are sick or weak...

Need protein but rice is a great food to store for long periods.

Whey powder, powdered eggs, powdered milk.
Cooking oils.
Canned goods.
Vitamins. You may not need them now but you certainly will if you can't get a normal diet.

WATER and water purification tablets.

Alcohol was a great suggestion.

Not a "prepper" personally, just a curious mind but I have prepared for my fair share of hurricanes. Thanks for all of your replies everyone.

****THE REST OF MY POST IS FOR SID AND ANYONE ELSE THAT IS IN THE PATH OF HURRICANE FLORENCE. This is an apology for derailing the thread and a warning for others to skip if they're not going to be affected or do not care****

Hurricane prep Bro.
It's looking like it will be a Cat 4 and depending how long it's over the gulstream, it could make a run for Cat 5.
Here is a link to the NWS office that's got MB in their area. NWS Wilmington, NC
They'll have the best advice for you regarding evacuations if need be. Always plan for worse than is forecasted.

I grew up in Beaufort County, on Hilton Head Island. My family never ran from a storm. I remember a few that were nasty, but that is the cost of living on the coast.

I really do miss the salt water. I miss the marshes, crabbing, shrimping, fishing, etc. I miss the afternoon thunderstorms. I miss the off season when the beach was all mine.

Who knows, I may make it back to what I call home one day. This fresh water inland stuff sucks. The river has its perks, but it has nothing on ocean life.

Hilton Head hasn't had a major hurricane make landfall in about 30years.
1885 - Cat 3
1959 - Hurricane Gracie (Cat 3)
1989 - Hugo (Cat 4) but this was further north than HH, made landfall just north of Charleston (but I'm sure they felt hurricane force winds in HH).

As someone that lived through Hurricane Andrew, I promise you a barrier island such as HH is the last place you want to be for a Cat 4 or 5 storm direct hit.

What I learned from Hurricane Harvey... have TWO types of emergency goods prepared.

1. Legitimate SURVIVAL goods: medicine, weapons, tools, food, water (or at least water decontamination kit), sleeping gear, hunting & fishing equipment, etc.

2. 1-2 week get by until life returns to normal goods: couple of change of clothes, cash, pre-planned place to stay, alternate forms of transportation (bikes, canoe, older car stored in a remote location, camper, etc.), toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo.

We had a place to stay after Harvey but had to run to Walmart for the essentials. LOL
