Hi all,
After a hiatus from Mustangs for a while (96, 98, and 03 Cobras) I’m finally in a black on black 97 Cobra with 69,000 miles on it. Feels amazing to be back!

I’m having trouble diagnosing a noise coming from the trans area of the car.

Standing start, slight acceleration and let off the clutch to start moving forward you get a grinding/metal on metal type noise. Does not do this shifting through the gears at all and if you go from a rolling start even slightly its minimal at best.

Video attached.

A little about the car, tubular k member with coil overs, T56-6 speed conversion with stage 3 clutch (brand unknown), MGW shifter, firewall adjuster and quadrant, 456 gears and the usual bolt ons.

Any ideas?

Almost sounds like something is getting torqued on acceleration and making contact. Have you checked everything in the driveline to see if anything is loose?

Is the noise there ONLY when your left foot is in contact with the clutch pedal?

It is only there when letting off the clutch just before being fully engaged and driving forward. In neutral no noise and driving any other time besides just starting out is just fine.

Car stopped, push clutch in, put gear in first, let off and start moving. Just before the clutch is fully engaged it will make the noise. Second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth nothing while moving. It’s like something is torquing. Stopped and going in reverse when just engaging it will do it too.

Have you had it up in the air yet? I'd look at the trans and motor mounts to see if anything is loose.
