I was specifically looking for a blued Dan Wesson Valor like that.

None. They were tragically lost in a johnboat accident.
So sad that happened! I feel your pain. I hope I never lose mine. But you know, stuff happens.

Got a new m&p 10 yesterday. Trying to figure out a scope to put on it (old UTG BugBuster on it now). Thinking about a Nikon m-308 or possibly a ATN day/night scope. Any other ideas? I want the ability to shoot 800 yards or so.

post that question here,
Precision and Long Range Rifles
or alternately here ...
Optics Talk
and you'll get some good answers from local Carolinas guys.
Both are sub forums on carolinafirearmsforum.com

And don't tell them you have a UTG scope on it (speaking as someone who once did). :D

Thanks! Yeah the UTG was one of those impulse Amazon purchases. Maybe this shows my inexperience with optics, but I think that it is pretty clear and has some good features for $75.

I have actually owned several when I was new to modern sporting rifles. The advice I got (after the fact) is that it will not have the kind of glass you want to shoot in any other than ideal lighting situations at 100 yards, much less at 800, and their capacity to maintain zero once you have it dialed in, especially with a larger caliber like .308, will be diminished.

In all honesty, the only magnified optic I ever owned for under $1,200 that wasn't garbage is a Nikon P223 in a 4-12x40. And only on a DI M4 clone. I moved it to a 308 and it was toast in Less than 20 rounds. Everything else failed within a few hundred rounds of install. Most of the cheap ones never lived long enough to get an initial zero.

Right now, the glass on my bolt gun cost me 30% more than I paid for the rifle it's on.

I did a ton of research from YouTube and forums. There were some awesome scopes but pricing was consideration, so I decided on the primary arms 4-14 FFP 308 ACSS reticle. I got it for $279 off Amazon. I looked at the 223 version in my local gun shop next to a $700 nikon and a $1000 leupold and honestly I thought that for the price difference they were not worth the extra clarity. I thought the ACOG had nicer glass than both of them (although eye relief was pretty bad). I don't hunt, and this won't be my primary SHTF rifle, so I don't need to trust my life to it. It was very clear (especially considering the price) and has an awesome reticle that is ffp. It has parallax and illumination too. Also picked up an Aero Precision mount, so for ~$350 I will be out there banging steel.

For being on a college student budget I am pretty happy. I can take the extra money and put it towards ammo or a free floated rail. I will be sure to update how it goes. Everything should be here by Friday, so I am going to try to shoot on Saturday if time allows!

I attached a picture of the reticle

Got a few more cans today, got 3 30 cal cans and 2 salvos cans. Happy with how short the pistol is with the can, I'm now going to start SBRing all my pistol rifles.

Update on the first range trip with the M&P...

Everything was going well. New red dot on my AK zero'd in about 4 rounds. Put a 1" group at 50 yards with wolf ammo. I was thrilled. My BugBuster Scope was transfered to my friend's m&p15 and we got it zero'd in about 5 shots. After that he was stacking rounds on top of each other dead center. Took my m&p 10 out of the case, and took a shot to try to gauge where the scope was. At 50 yards it banged the steel just left of center. Adjusted the scope just a bit, and dead center. I was pretty happy with that. I never have had luck like that with a new scope/red dot. Also, the ar500 target and stand we made held up great (picture below).

That was where my luck ran out. The third shot stovepiped. I thought it was just a break-in fluke. Cleared it, dropped the bolt and shot again. Hit my target, but again, stovepipe. Took the rifle apart, tried to find any issues, but everything looked fine. Dropped the bolt, shot, and it looked like it cycled that time. I pulled the trigger again *click*. I realized it didn't actually pick up a round that time. So I tried again. Every shot for the next 10-15 rounds either stovepiped or didnt pick up a round. This was with a variety of quality ammo from 147 to 168 grain. It also was frustrating that every other shot that hit the ar500 target broke the chains holding it up. We packed up and called it a day.

This is my first AR platform rifle so I decided I wanted to seek help from someone more experienced. I dropped it off to my local gun shop and they said it was short stroking. They said they would detail clean it, polish the ramp, and test fire it. They said if they could not fix it they would send it back to S&w and make them fix it.

The gunsmith said it looked a bit dry on the bolt carrier, so he said that might be the issue. Hoping for the best, I am very happy with how the gun shop took care of me.

AR's like to run wet. Lube that bolt/BCG before every range session.
