It was two things, heat and incorrect calibration, that killed the 72.

I had one of the first ones as a test bed. When I first put it on it failsafed like a SOB.

I tuned on it for days and finally got it 100 percent. Then temperatures changed and it all went to pot.

I created a value file that I offered to other tuners and it was only happy on 07-10 cars. 11+ was going to take additional tuning development.

Although it had factory style Delrin gears, something in it was swelling and creating more friction due to heat and causing enough of a voltage difference that it took the easy way out and failsafed.

Mine worked fine otherwise but I wouldn't sell it to a general consumer.

I used to actually keep my 65 in my trunk when I had the twin 72. I got stranded with a wrench light once and that was the last time I left the house without my twin 65... A few years back, I made it all the way to Ocean City Maryland from the Philly area and drove around there for a day before it wrench lighted me. I thought we had it all worked out and couldn’t have been happier... that is until it pooped the bed on me on coastal highway... LOL
It made no sense, no rhyme or reason why... luckily I had the twin 65 with me in the trunk, 15 minutes and I was back on the road with no issues... other than not nearly as much fun...:(:D

Interesting, I have not had any wrench light issues with my 72mm but i have noticed the idle hang twice for a couple seconds in the drive through at DQ since the temp here is in the 90s now.

lol, I wonder what the hell my 72mm L&M TB is going to do. I know they were quirky and some didn't work right at all. I guess we will find out which unit I got used.

We have an adapter to run a KB168 on the Gen 3 and will soon test it back to back on the dyno and then the track.
Again, my friends car has had no issues with the 160 yet the goal is big power/maximized drag strip.

Yo, I am interested in buying a KB adapter. Can you hook a brother up?

I got tired of waiting for the 160mm from VMP, and went with a Whipple Elliptical 170. It requires some mods to fit, but nothing crazy. I’ll have results in a few days.
Please post up how you fit it. If it can be fit reliably, Gen 3 may go back into consideration for me.

Traded another round of emails with VMP. Apparently they have the mechanical bugs worked out of 160 but have not ironed out tunes and are not shipping out yet. My tuner has no interest in touching it until it has spent some time on the street. I would like to go with KB TB if I can figure out how to get it to work.

I had to port the inlet of the blower slightly in two places, and I redrilled new mounting holes (all four) in the throttle body. That’s it.

I got my start up tune today, and dyno tuning is tomorrow. Right now it starts, idles, and drives around the block. So that’s a good sign. Lol.

New I’m pretty sure he meant XBA elbow with KB168 TB and 148 JLT
That’s a proven best airflow combo for stock TVS

I am such a BOOB. My mistake on what I described in my above post. I did in fact follow Lund's advice on PBH package who assured me Lund had tuned dozens of the KB168Mono+ XBA Elbow + 148JLT which is HUGE...but I love this combo. There are zero issues at idle, off the idle, overall TB response and WOT...no stumble, no surge....just like my TwinTB. There was NO need for the foam diffuser on the JLT148. Lund was awesome & did provide me with their bit more agressive race tune after I signed a waiver but the Race Mustang dyno Tech reviewed all the parameters & advised at that shop with car on dyno he would've used the same timing/AF Parameters...no risk anywhere.
I already had the BPS O-Sized plenum. After speaking with BPS I was advised they made the XBA exclusively for PBH. The XBA plenum was required for bolt match to the KB168. I did have some minor issues of alignment on install but the guys at PBH were awesome & patient with me lol!
In the end the swap did cost me around $900 net which I felt was well worth the 36rwhp gain. At certain levels if we want a bit more we must pay a lot more.
PS: If I wrote "PBH" 5X I had to correct it 5X from "PBR". I must have cheap college dorm beer on my brain :)->) .

Good luck.
Are you removing a 4.0 Whipple for the TVS 2650?

No, this is on my ‘12 GT500 coming from a stock blower.

My previous Whipple car is long gone. That car went from a 2.9L to a 4.0L to a 4.5L. I’m going a different route this time.

Got tuned today, and the results were pleasing for sure.

778rwh/706rwt.

17 lbs, 17 degrees timing. Pump gas.
Stock motor, ARH longtubes, catted 3” H pipe, Borla axlebacks, ID1000’s, VMP bap, Whipple Elliptical 170 TB, DD149 intake, AFCO HE w/dual fans, ‘13 intercooler pump.

The Whipple Elliptical works great. No stalling, or weird idle.

Those are monster numbers. Are you 5.8 or 5.4? I dynoed yesterday 680 on pump gas. Same set up as you although VMP twin 67 and 128 CAI. Blower is choking with smaller TB and intake.

It’s a 5.4L. I think you’re right, that blower is choking. VMP saw a 30 hp gain from swapping the 67 to a 160 on this blower on a bone stock GT500. Longtubes? Boost/timing?

17 lbs. 15 degrees I believe. I do have LTs. Tuned for 91. Want to go with big KB if Bimini will sell me adaptor plate.

Our 91 sucks ass, I would run a can of Torco with every fill-up.

FWIW : Finished our car, made right at 1000whp Boost only, on E85, with the new VMP Gen 3 Blower, on a L&M Built 5.8l.

Had the VMP 173mm TB on her. :)
That’s a great result and in-line with other built E85 builds.
What timing if you don’t mind?
I’m at 24 deg with the 2.3 and E85 at SAE 965rwhp. I’m pretty sure torque was 840.
It looks like 1000-1050rwhp is the high avg with built E85 TVS2650 cars.
Still leaning towards 4.0 Whipple for my goals.
Any dyno graphs/pics Josh?
