Ever lose track of time at work?

I am wiped out. Went in to work today at 07:00. Had two special projects to get done. Seems like fifteen mninnutes went by, I'm cleaning up thinking how that went much faster than I thought. But, funny thing, I'm thirsty as anything, I'm sore, tired, and mentally fried. I look at my watch: 17:10. I worked through lunch because I forgot all about it, so that's 10 hours! Good Lord, no wonder I'm wrecked. I never realized how much I depend on the outside world to give me cues about time passing. Got the two projects done, though! Also backed up two different systems even though they had both been backed up in the last three months because I am a firm believer that you can never have too many backups.

Even by my standards of losing track of time, though, this is a record.

Anybody else have this happen?

I’ve reached a point in life where I’m seldom bored, and never discontent, save for learning of truly grave or polarizing bad luck in other people’s lives.

Sometimes I can dig into a 20 hour day and follow it up with 2 more, and come out feeling like I got a ton done, but was on auto pilot. Other days I can count the seconds passing, and am so consciously awake that the buzz from a lightbulb keeps my mind in the present.

I think it’s directly related to my quality of sleep and diet.

Totally. Was in at 7:00 AM today and when I looked at the clock it was 1:00 PM and realized I hadn't taken a break yet, no lunch, nothing. Got a coffee and kept grinding until the end of the shift. Honestly if the day is going by fast, I just keep grinding through. I try not to interrupt the pace. Slow days on the other hand............much different story.

Do you find that with projects that have time constraints, time seems to go by faster than when you are just doing busy work?

Look into prospective and retrospective time estimations.

Gives a little insight into how our mind perceives the elapse of time based on the attention devoted to a given task.

Looking it up now. Thanks!

It's pretty easy to lose track of your time when your work is clean and fun.
When I was a private-sector, non--govermnet contract company design engineer, 8 hours seemed like one.

But now that I am a member of the private sector working caste, time drags on and your post sounds like bragging or complaining...and i say you don't know what "wiped out" is until you have been reduced to working in the retail sector or some other crap job.

The older I get, the faster the days go by. Its starting to scare me to be honest.

This.

I lose track of time at work all the time. Doesn't help that from late 2014 to mid-2017, I worked a minimum of 60hrs a week, topping out at 114hrs a few times. Then in mid 2017, my health failed like Hillary on election day, and I went to straight 45's. What a difference. Time absolutely flies now. I find that even when I'm in "the zone" with music going, it's still not enough time in the day to get things done.

Well, I'm 56, I've been a construction laborer, union brick layer, a bus boy (for eight hours), a convenience store clerk, copier repair guy, and xray-film processor repair guy. So trust me, I know public sector, retail, and in general, shitty jobs. So I think I'm pretty authoritative when I say I know what "wiped out" feels like.

I wasn't complaining. I hit on this x-ray repair gig a while back and it has been a great job; and recently it got awesome, true dream-job stuff.

If you have got to the point where someone else talking about something they love is what you see as bragging, you may want to consider a career change, and soon, because what you're doing now is dragging you down. If you're in a no-win scenario, then stop trying to win, stop trying to not lose, and change the scenario.

I'm right there with you. I'm 56 now. Since I was 45, time flies, and every year it just goes faster and faster, like one of those fast-forward buttons where the speed increases the longer the button is held down. At this rate, when my death comes, I may not have time to notice as I speed right past it.

I love the days you describe. I hate the days where I am counting down the hours until I can go home. My job is in project development and management. I cannot seem to make my work fall into a steady stream, it's all or nothing.

I know what youre describing. I get them from time to time, too busy to notice the clock.

Although one time I did lose about 12 hours when I was drunk down in Mexico, but that's not really the same thing.

I was a correctional officer for a few years and days would just fly by. I think it's because we did rounds every 27 minutes. I worked 12 hour shifts and sometimes 17 hour because someone would call in.

Time is seemingly relative to consciousness. When our consciousness is in a low, dense vibrational state such as depression, or sorrow, time moves very slowly. When we are engaged in high frequency activity, I’ve noticed time moves too quickly.

I propose trying to slow down fun times by injecting some sadness such as “this is awesome but I do have an ingrown toe nail I’ll have to fix soon” or “wow this is so great but I have jury duty coming up”
