Hey guys, new to the forums and looking for some input. I recently bought my dad’s 1997 Cobra off of him, and I’m looking to change up the exhaust. Does anyone know the part numbers for the Borla XR-1 or Stinger mufflers that can be welded into the stock exhaust? I noticed that borla no longer makes a catback for the 96-98 cars. Thanks!

Honestly most kits wh the same type of mufflers will sound similar.....if the XR-1 are round straight through try looking at magnapacks, Pypes Bomb or something like that.

Update: The Borla 94-95' Cobra Catback P/N: 14445, fit my 96 without issue. Also just to let you know that catback has their S-Type mufflers, not XR1's.

I don't think they make a 2.25" XR-1 or S-Type (Stingers). I mated a JBA 3" catback with XR-1 3" to get the mufflers I wanted.

That's interesting to know, and I'd love it if that's the case as I've been wanting to replace my original XR-1 catback with one with the quieter turbo mufflers. Borla claims it won't fit '96-8 Cobras, though. Do you have pictures of it installed? There are really no clearance issues with the front muffler sections? I also thought the 14445 has the turbo and not s-type mufflers.

Regarding other comments in this thread....the original Cobra XR-1 catbacks (pn 14672, for '96-7 and never made for '98) came with the 2.5" oval XR-1 mufflers and not round. And yes, universal XR-1 mufflers (oval or round) only come in 2.5"+ tube diameters.

ClarkGable, if you really want an XR-1 catback, and the new '94-5 turbo system really does fit '96-8, I'd be willing to sell mine. Shoot me a PM if interested. My XR-1 catback is in flawless condition, as it's only been on my garage-kept, fair-weather driven 14K-mile car.

Hey thanks for the heads up, this is all very interesting information. Can you tell me some of the differences between the XR-1, s-type, and turbo mufflers? I know for a fact that I want to go with Borla, but I’m not exactly sure of what I want, or how to do it (the car isn’t a daily driver and only has 56k miles on it).

They have different sound. Listen on Youtube to clips to see what you like. I was told with the amount of boost I run that I would blow out stingers so I had to go with race XR-1.

Also I know this is not the same but I had a dual Flowmaster 2.5" catback on a V6 1994 Mustang and took it off and installed it on a 1997 Cobra. Fit perfect. So would think the 94-95 Borla would fit a 96-98.

I'll attempt to post pictures of it installed over the weekend. I have to do some adjusting and install my OR-X. As the day passed, I didn't get any pics. I just wanted to finish.

I didn't purchase the cat-back new. I purchased from another seller over on corral.net. He stated it was for a 94-95' Cobra, but also fits 87-93' lx cars too. Also listed the part number as 14445.

I have the borla catback with touring mufflers off my car. I'd sell just the mufflers

Thanks, I don’t want to cut into my XR-1 system to replace mufflers. But if your axle to intermediate pipe sections with mufflers are in excellent condition and you’d be willing to sell both muffler section assemblies please message me as I’m interested.
