One of my sons called at 5PM to say he got a paid internship with a private employer through his college that starts Tuesday, and that the school asked for his birth certificate.

What's up with that? It's a state school and his residency was established before he got in two years ago. I can't think of why they would want anything more than an SS number like all other typical employers. I don't think this outfit is a government contractor or anything.

Guess me and the missus will go to a different coastal town than we planned tomorrow, so we can get that to him.

Probably state government required. I've had to provide two forms of ID before from a list (easiest ones were SS Card, and Birth Certificate) on contracts that didn't require a clearance.

Passport usually works to.

Typically the office manager will photo copy it, either sign something saying they witnessed it, or actually attach it and provide it to the corresponding agency. Just to cover every ones ass.

It's a small private company, and my other son goes to the same state university and works in the school bookstore, which is owned by Barnes and Noble, and they never asked for it, so I can't figure it out.

Seems like he will be close to personal identifiable information at the very least. Peoples socials, billing info, contact info, etc. Someone wants to hold him extra accountable for something.

When I got hired at Globalfoundries I had to give them a copy of my birth certificate. I thought it was kind of odd as well but that's what they wanted.

On-line marketing for a small manufacturer, so I don't think so.

Probably I-9 verification.

thats what I was thinking but it is NOT legal to tell someone which documents the employee must provide. It is up to the EMPLOYEE to provide their choice of valid documentation. A list "A" document is something like a passport, green card etc... and you ONLY have to provide 1 document from list A. If you don't you have to provide 1 list "B" and 1 list "C" document. List "B" would be a government issued ID/driver's license and list "C" either a social or birth certificate, originals or certified copies and not supposed to be laminated.

Im really not sure on what grounds they would be demanding a birth certificate

I have to show 2 forms of ID just to get an updated badge, including birth certificate. And my badge has my picture on it.

I also needed to show my birth certificate before I could go to orientation.

I just interviewed for a job yesterday and had to provide a copy of my birth certificate and show the original at the interview.

Albeit is for a local govt position.

I had to go through the I-9 verification process when I moved to a different site within the same company. I questioned why they needed to verify my citizenship after 14 years.

Best way I know to run a background check...With all the fake documents floating around I am surprised every employer does require one.
