I return stateside in a couple weeks, and I think I want to simplify things by shifting to a flip phone. When I was home last month, I was just in shock of everyone staring at phones like Zombies in a public place. It’s not just the anti-social aspect of things, but also the complete loss of situational awareness. I like to people watch as much as the next guy, but I feel more like a sheep dog standing watch over the helplessly self-absorbed. I’m sure it is related to age too - I’ll complete my 55th lap around the sun this year. Thoughts?

I'm sort of going in the opposite direction by buying a more advanced smart phone. I use mine for work, so having one allows me to get out of the office more often and enjoy the outside world. That being said, self discipline is needed to prevent technology from controlling your life.

I have never owned anything other the a flip phone. I spend plenty of time on my computer at home I don't need to do it when I'm out.

Yes I agree on the zombie comment, just sad people stare at a phone all day

Quite a few of my friends have already done it. We probably would if it wasn't for work.
Same. I am a stay at home dad but work on the side and use it when I am running around.

Our phones have actually become a lot more to us. Not because of social media, but because of the other things they can do. For instance, we ditched satellite radio because they kept driving the cost up and we got sick or renegotiating with them. We have unlimited data, so we just stream now for music. I also like listening to eBooks when I drive.

With the ability to use it as a hot spot, it saves when I am letting my kids use the signal too. We also ditched cable Tv.

Lastly, the cell phone cameras have gotten so good, I actually use it as my main camera. I am a photographer as a hobby. I am thankful for that, because now my lenses and equipment are dirt cheap compared to what they were several years ago when using a regular camera. Here is a pic I took yesterday. (No lens)

We are saving hundreds of dollars a month now.

I'm proud to say that I've never had a smart phone. I use Cricket with unlimited text and long distance ($20/month) and that's it. I have no desire to be connected to the world while I'm out instead I prefer to enjoy what what/who's around me.

Go without it and enjoy the life around you b/c life's too short to be staring at a screen all the time.

Yeh im feeln it. However, my rep told me they dont allow people to go backwards. Only way to have one is to already have one and to never have went to smart phone. Life was just fine and we all survived without smart phones. Life went on. We all still worked just fine.

Now the rage is smart watches. Jesus H Christ man.

the only appeal to fakebook at this point in time is thats where I keep up with whats going on for car things I wanna do around town.

I cant see ditching the smartphone though, as mentioned above its my camera and I can take care of work crap remotely. Then theres things like our season tickets being all digital, its way easier to pull em up on the phone vs printing them all

I did that 5 years ago and haven't looked back. I don't have any social media and it's the best thing I've ever done.

I did that a couple years ago and was off for about a year and a half. I am thinking I might do it again because the anti-gun talk is killing me (Possible pun?). Also, can we stop hearing about Hogg? We give him WAY too much attention when he deserves none.

See, there I go again. I need to just stop.

No however no Facebook for me never had one. I deleted my Myspace in 2011 and haven’t had a social media since. I’m happy with svtp if that counts.

I don’t do the bookface or the chatsnap. Never have and never will.

But the smartphone has a lot of good things going for it. Love it for directions/GPS , photos, and simple things like weather.

Who here remembers calling Time and Temperature on their house phones?
