At 800 miles I changed the oil in my 2017 mustang GT performance pack, with factory Motorcraft synthetic blend 5W20, Motorcraft oil filter and added a magnetic drain plug at the same time. At 2600 miles, I decided to switch to Amsoil signature series 5w20 with amsoil oil filter. So this is how the magnetic drain plug looked after 1800 miles!? Seems very excessive to me!

I’ve added a link to a video

I'm not an expert on magnetic drain plugs, but that looks minimal/normal to me. What you SHOULD do is record the amount of metal the plug picks up between oil changes. If I were you, I'd change the oil/filter at 1,500 mile increments maybe 3 times and take a photo of the plug each time. If the amount is about the same each time, unless it always looked excessive, I wouldn't worry. If it increases each at each change, investigate further. JMO.

The graphite looking stuff mostly comes from the cams and valve train....perfectly normal!!:)

Shiny flecks could be signs of a problem...that's why I asked about them!!

It's mostly machine left overs working its way out. You'll notice far less of it over time. You should have seen the magnetic plug on my 6.4 Powerstroke after the first oil change. Lots of iron in that engine.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it! The ford tech acted like I had lost my mind. I guess since They don’t come with a magnetic drain plug, there was nothing for him to compare it to. I guess it is mostly graphite looking stuff. I guess I was mostly concerned about a larger looking piece that was sticking out of the side. I guess since that was after 1800 miles, I’ll do another 1800 miles and change again and compare. Here’s a closer picture from the video.
