Being a LEO in Florida, when I came home from Iraq in 2010 and was placed back to full duty. My department was conducting active shooter training at one of our local high schools during the summer with our fire department and paramedics. That year was the first time we started to train on making single officer entries to a school shooting, because the lives of our children are top priority. And as stated in a previous post we took an oath to serve and protect our community, hence why we have been training with multiple scenarios.

So it may have been a training issue with that SO, but yes that deputy (SRO) is a coward for not going in at any cost. If you're ready to retire than he should have applied to be a Baliff not an SRO.

Now as far as arresting a juvenile here in Florida is a bit of an obstacle. If a juvenile is caught committing a misdemeanor than we have to first call the Juvenile Assessment Center (JAC) and see if they are in the system yet. Than we issue a Civil Citation for a court appearance. They get up to 3 of these before we can arrest them. If they comitt a felony than it's no questions asked, they are arrested.

It's sad that these tragedies keep on happening at our schools. But this kid was deemed not a threat twice by the mental health institution in Broward County. He also did have his weapons confiscated by that SO but a family member than took those in their custody from the SO, what happened to those weapons I don't know. But then since he is 19 he can purchase a rifle or shotgun.

I blame the training program of the SO; the mental health professionals; district school board; and Governor Rick Scott who has cut state funding which affects mental health programs, school programs etc...that may have helped prevent this.

I agree with raising the age to purchase firearms to 21 excluding military and first responders such as firefighter and EMS. Law Enforcement Officers have to be 21 to be hired for police departments and high patrol and to be road deputies. Correction Officers can be 18 to be hired by the Sheriff's Office.

If you are diagnosed with a mental health issue than you should be flagged as not being able to purchase or own a firearm as Domestic Violence offenders and felons are. Reason being, I come into contact with too many people who stop taking their meds and act abnormal/dangerous.

Also parents need to be held accountable for their childrens' education when it comes to firearms. The states need to initiate a training program for children/pre teens/teens and adults when purchasing a firearm for the first time not just giving out the literature.

As it has been said over and over again Guns don't kill people, people kill people with guns.

A few corrections, highlighted in BLUE.

This is an agency or regional decision; this is not statutory law in Florida.

Law Enforcement Officers have to be 21 to be hired for police departments and high patrol and to be road deputies. Correction Officers can be 18 to be hired by the Sheriff's Office.

To become a LEO or CO in FL, one only need be 19 per FSS 943.13.

If you are diagnosed with a mental health issue than you should be flagged as not being able to purchase...

Except that HIPPA laws prevent this from being common knowledge.

I grew up in East Texas where we start handing guns as soon as we can hold one up. I had access to guns and bullets since i was about 8 years old. Instead of raising age limits start teaching gun safety and finding the crazy kids and doing something with them.
How man school shootings has TX had??? None.
Down here the little bastard would have been locked up and if he did make it too the school they would have smoked his ass as soon as he hit the front door.
Give me a break the age limit is fine. The FBI and local law enforcement screwed up and got a lot of kids killed that day.

That's how it was in Ohio where I grew up. Our high school parking lot had rifles and shotguns in almost every vehicle and no one thought of shooting up the school.

At 15 I was given a mandatory boating course and a mandatory firearms/gun safety & hunting course. I had to pass it to pass gym, and therefore be mildly aware of what to do with a gun if I came across one.

To many states ignore that type of education. They let kids ignorantly walk through life thinking they can get behind the wheel of a boat like "it's just a car" or pickup a gun and think "it's just like the game I play".
