I’m looking to boost my 5.0 and I’ve heard that the oil pump gears are one of the first things you need to change to have safe power and every shop I’ve looked at has quoted me at around 8-10 hours of labor and I was wondering if it’s worth it or should I make it a weekend job

I didn’t even think about that, if you were in my position would you take it to a shop or do it yourself?

From my understanding you don't need to do them until 600wph. If your under that then you should be fine.

I got mine done after the supercharger at a local shop, so it was more expensive

I was in the same boat. After I procharged my car and was making over 600rwhp I decided to have a shop install OPG and crank sprocket for peace of mind. You really only need to uprade though if you are making a lot of power (over 600hp) or are revving really high like with a boss or CJ intake. Also bouncing off the rev limiter is really bad for the stock OPG.

If you have the time and patience, do them yourself and save $1,000. If you’re not comfortable with timing, have a shop do them. Just depends on how comfortable you are.

To me $1000 is a decent amount of money so I did mine myself. Definitely do the crank gear as well since your right there. It's not to hard of a job and blazer707 has great instructions on here for it.

Yea I looked at the DIY on here regarding OPG install and decided to spend the cash to have a shop install them rather than f*ck up my engine. I would only recommend doing it yourself if you are mechanically inclined and/or have the help of someone who has experience with working on mod motors.
