FIL bought an ‘08 5 Series with around 110k miles just before Christmas.

Sometime in early January it blew all its oil just a few miles from home.

BMW dealership quoted him 2k for some gasket.....and a mechanic in his area said 3-400...

**** that. Don’t know what he decided to do.

I am actually looking the Audi RS5 or GT350 as my next car. Two different cars but both have high reving v8s. The 350 is more of the drivers car but the Audi is way nicer and more refined. As far as the M3 (v8) its nice but i keep hearing the same thing about reliability.

The RS5 is on my radar also. It definitely checks all the boxes.

I wish I could afford a 2018 Porsche GT3. I would buy one in a heartbeat.
What a gorgeous car.
For some reason I don't get the same feeling from Porsche that I do from the other German companies.

Out of the German cars, I have the most confidence with their cars.

I just can't afford them lol.

I have a M3 and C63 and have never had any problems. Both are out of warranty now and I have had more problems with my American cars that stil have a warranty.

Those who just say " never own German cars out of warranty " as a blanket statement are naive. Every car company has problems , some ppl have better luck with American cars and others with German.

I love my E55 AMG out of warranty.

As easy to work on as a domestic, and many of the parts cost less than Motorcraft equivalents.

I'm in Europe, so my view might be a little different. After I sold the terminator (and 2 other SN95s) I went out to buy something more daily friendly (had to drive a lot more for work). Ended up with a G37s coupe for a few months which was horrible. Constant CEL's, leaking seal on the gearbox and the alternator was toast after 50k miles.

Sold that and got into an E92 325i by accident. The contradiction in my next statement is strong; it's by far the best car I've ever owned (for what I used it for), yet cost me the most in maintenance.

It did everything well, 1000 mile drive to the south of France or Italy in total comfort, and when you get there, rip through the mountain roads with total confidence. Used it every day for 2 years and always loved getting in after work. Put coilovers and full exhaust on and it was great!

However; even though it was a well maintained car and far from a lemon, it had every known BMW problem in the 2 years I owned it. ABS module took a dump on holiday in Italy. High pressure fuelpump took a dump (DI), injectors were wonky. Replaced the valvecover gasket 3 times and even though you could eat from the engine, it was so clean, it still managed to leak a tiny drop on the rear header which was just below the HVAC inlet and stenced up the interior with burning oil smell.

Now, all of these things are normal and it would've been OK if I could easily fix it myself like I did with the mustangs. But all the parts have to be bought at BMW and stupid prices, and half of the time you have to reprogram something on the car which only specialist software can do.

So, now that I have another job close to home, I sold the BMW and got a 2005 Mustang GT. It's worse in every way, but it's simple and cheap to fix. Which I prefer.

It comes down to preference really. Are you on the road a lot and do you care for the luxury, build quality and driving experience of a BMW, go for it! But factor in added cost or get a warranty. Do you prefer a simple honost mustang, and to hell with interior quality or road noise? Get that, live with the faults it has and spend the money you save on mods.

I do still miss it sometimes!

Man, I'd really like to lease an RS5 when they're available, but this thread is scaring me lol. The Audi dealer here is about 30 minutes from my house. I don't want to have to drive over there constantly.

They’ll treat you like royalty if you do have to go.
