03 and up p71's. It's like driving a couch and the 03 and up don't have that pesky issue of spitting spark plugs. They can be had for under a grand.

I agree with this as well. The panther platform is reliable and parts are plentiful and cheap. I used to DD a 91 Towncar and it was like driving a couch.

I take care of a fleet of panthers. Some 50k some 225k. All drivin by the most abusive people in the market. If kept well they are solid. My personal 09 has 150k but I've swapped in a 5 speed and termi swap. It's the most fun in a 4 door I've had.
One of ours is an 04 and had 225k and drives everyday. Makes 400 mile trip on the Reggie.
Ive seen some with 50k ready to fall apart though. You really gotta know the maintenance history.
This is my vote as well. 2500 should get you a lower mileage 09-11 if you look hard enough. Good luck

2003-2009 civic hybrid, check out local prices before excluding them from your search... There was a class-action lawsuit re: honda's estimated MPG vs reality (e.g. instead of the estimated 50mpg, they were getting upper 30s), so prices tend to be very cheap.

If you want to go over your budget, say $5k total, accord V6's are a blast, but figure timing belt cost into your estimates.

2008-2011 ford focus. They are the forgotten focus between the 12 up body style and 07 down body. Got mine for $3000. Has a 5 speed, blutooth, sirius and had 71,000 miles on it. Everything is cheap for them and I get great gas mileage. I needed mine for city parking its such a slow yet reliable car.
I just got done searching for a new dd. just picked up a 09 focus coupe 5 speed with 80k. It needed new tires and a wheel bearing so I'm all in at $3000. I would highly recommend the 08-11 focus.

The power amenities in the EX are worth it in a daily application.

Are the accord seats vs. Civic a decent bit larger?

Trying to decide if its worth the extra comfort for the higher cost and lower mpg.

I also still need to decide if I will go with a manual or auto transmission. If I new for sure traffic would be light I would go manual for sure. Lots of traffic auto.

Just not sure on how reliable the autos are in comparison to the manual in accord and civic.

It'd be tough to get 30mpg highway out of one, maybe the newer gens. Mine is a 96 and 26-28 was doable when it was stock. The convenience of having a bed makes up for the mileage personally but there are drawbacks. I'm 6'3 and can't get comfortable in the truck if I'm in it for over say an hour. Fun though!

At this price point and if reliability and mpg are your main priorities, I feel like there's no debate.. 96-2000 Civic. And if the fun factor isn't there initially, you know, there's always tons of parts out there for pretty cheap.

I cant believe nobody said an Acura Integra from 94-01.

Indestructible as hell, and twice as much fun to drive over a civic. I beat the shit out of my 2000 GSR for 160,000 miles and the family member i sold it to took it to around 315,000 with no issues before totaling it. Total rock of a car.

Much safer than a civic, more comfortable (by a mile), good MPG and easily in your price range.

Both of my 4 banger 5 speed rangers got 30mpg on the regular, good luck finding a decent one in your budget though. Prices have gone through the roof. At least here anyway.
