Why don’t you get the Range Rover and just trade it in before the warranty is up. If that’s what she wants then I don’t see an issue.

It might go like that, but (luckily) she's noticed that there are lots of other upscale vehicles in that price point.

She's mentioned the Cayenne, for example. She, at one point, was interested in the BMW X-5, but both costly, and impractical interior.

Thanks for the responses, these, in part, have gotten her to move away from the Rover.

You mention “impractical interior” on the X5. What do you mean by that? Ive been talking to a BMW dealer on either the X3 or X5 with M packages.
Trying to find a nice balance for my “wants and needs”.

Mostly the console taking up so much space in the front, and the cargo area is small with the back seats in use.

The Grand Cherokee comes off a bit better.

One thing we needed to consider: we needed to transport (occasionally) 7 and a dog, more often 4 and dog. Explorer did the former, the Grand Cherokee the latter. With some gear, supporting 4 + quadruped.

With the decline of my parents, (one is in a home, the other not far from one) the 7 + dog is dwindling, so the X5 may get revisited. Don't have a dog yet, but kids (7 & 9) are asking.

Possibly doing as BDF8 wrote as the BMW repairs are crazy expensive as the Rover.

Another thing against the BMW was the dealers (BMW of Fairfax, and BMW of Alexandria) wouldn't talk to me (Fairfax) and Alexandria we had to corner a guy.

The guy in Alexandria finally (after some pushing) said to go in the back, there are some good deals on financing.

I said we would write a check for it, but at that price we'd only buy one.

He got friendly then, and we left, never to return.

Sounds like you need more space in the SUV than what BMW offers. I’ve kicked around more towing capacity, extra space and interior materials ( some vehicles look nice on the inside, but feels like cheap plastic) and engine options.

Typically, I don’t like the full size SUV....however I actually like the new 2018 Expedition and will test drive one. Everything I have read on them are great and the back end is done right ( as opposed to the GM counterparts which I think are butt ugly).

I have 3-6 months to narrow the choice.

I might need more space, but my experience weighs on me from the BMW dealer.

Looking at the MB GLE 350 now. I tracked with the MBCA once at Summit Point, and they were a great group. Joe Wozney was the president then.

Looks like the MB would hit me for $56K or so.

I’d check out the 2018 Navigator. That thing is straight up beautiful.

Might not be quite big enough for your needs but I am gonna suggest the Toyota Highlander. Three row, can get it in awd, will last forever, and doesn’t depreciate much over the years.

My girl originally wanted a Range Rover and on paper and aesthetically, they're great. But after a significant amount of research, we veered away from the Rover and ended up getting a Porsche Cayenne. This was just a couple years ago but so far so good. My advice is to go to Porsche and atleast take a test drive. We also test drove the Audi Q7 and MDX. All of which will save you from headache the Rover appears to bring.

edit: I forgot to add that we test drove a ‘13 Range Rover while we were in the market and the thing was squealing over minor road bumps. The car itself was nice overall, bells and whistles, automatically adjusted ride height and it was beautiful. But the dealer claimed he didn’t hear the squeal and overall wasn’t a great saleman

I’m in the market to replace my lease vehicle(BMW 528i) in the next 6 months. I want an SUV/ Crossover or truck. I eliminated the Range Rover due to expense and reliability issues. The Sport does look cool, but thats it. I thinkI have my list narrowed down to the BMW X3 M40i, BMW X5 (6 or 8 cyl), Ford Raptor, Jaguar F Pace or Grand Cherokee SRT.
My initial thoughts-

Test drove the X3- great sound, fast, great handling.

X5- a bigger X3, not as nimble as the X3 unless you get the M package, very good towing limit.

Raptor- Not test driven, non sold at or below MSRP, probably fun ride. It is an SVT vehicle I want for a daily driver....worried I would be disappointed as a daily driver. Price were right, may be buy it.
Jaguar F Pace nit test driven. Love seeing these on the road, really nice looking. Concerned about cargo space and the infamous Jaguar unreliability.
Jeep SRT not test driven. Great looking SUV, best in- class tow limit, powerful. Concerned about winter drive ability, dealer service, reliability.
I would consider Explorer, but parents have a 2012 and the design looks aged to me.
I am liking the new Expedition, need to research it more.

Obviously, I’m still wide open on my vehicle.

We have a 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT in our small fleet. Do not stop, do not pass go, run, run like hell.

They suck you in with their nice interiors and power but everything in them other than the engine is shit.

In 60,000 miles we have replaced the balljoints 2 times and it's due for another set.
The uconnect radio/navigation/HVAC screen has been replaced once, updated a few times and still freezes at the most inopportune times.
The differential and driveshaft were replaced with less than 5,000 on the vehicle.
This is a dealer serviced vehicle.
You're treated like you brought them a 2005 Neon.

We gave up on Dodge Ram pickups 5 years ago when I insisted we try something else and we're not going back.

FlahDah man.
We are in a similar situation with our BMW bit 12 months out.

An Alpha Romero was next to us and told her that is our next vehicle. She loved it. I will sneak in the Quadrofillio.

The RR have a big following, like the Jeep for rich chicks.

I have heard the exact same issues you describe from a friend in Wisconsin.Like the looks and power of the GC, but all else trumps it I think.

if there so unreliable why do sales keep going up and ppl keep buying them? I'll tell ya cause ppl like u are talking out of ur ass and read some internet article about problems they had 30 years ago and then get on internet forums and spread more BS about them......

yet sales continue to go up. thats cleary cause ppl aren't buying them and their unreliable smh.

https://jalopnik.com/if-range-rovers-are-so-unreliable-why-do-people-still-1728727599
"But don’t they care that Range Rovers are unreliable? The answer is, quite frankly, no, they don’t. One of my favorite columns I’ve ever written dealt with this exact issue. In it, I argued that Land Rover doesn’t need to worry about reliability scores, and J.D. Power ratings, and Consumer Reports, because they consistently lose every metric and yet their cars still sell for full sticker – and they usually have a waiting list. Simply put, Range Rover buyers don’t consider things like cost of ownership and long-term durability. They want the nicest car they can get, they own it solely under warranty, and then they get a new one."

i have had several Land Rovers and Range Rovers, but I typically get rid of cars within a year so have never had an issue with any of them...if you get one then I would plan to rid of it within a year before anything happens...

personally I would get a Raptor- I had a Gen 1 and now have a Gen 2 and LOVE it...great daily, just difficult to fit into parking lots and spaces sometimes- but I deal.
