So, my son says, "I need an X Box for Christmas, everyone else has one!" :) School me on what I should consider (he wants to be able to play/converse with his friends with it while playing games) - I see they have S, One, etc. Haven't had the opportunity to research yet and figure with the brainpower of SVT I won't need to ;) Figure I can pick one up at Wally World, Best Buy, etc. in time for Christmas. TIA, and Merry Christmas, all!

If you have the funds, get him the Xb1 X. I believe its around $500. His friends will probably be jelly. Also ask him what games his friends are playing so you know what to get.

There are 3 models basically and the cheapest one will be the oldest model, so I would either get the X (depends on your budget) or the S model (improvement over the first one that came out, but still not near the level the XB1 X is).

specs comparing XB1 X to PS4 pro:

I want the XB1 X but with enough time the prices will drop so I will scoop one up when they're $200. LOL

damn $500 ? My kid would be mowin lawns LOL

It's really not bad when you consider no way in hell you can build a similarly spec'd computer for anywhere near that cost.

I say Xbox One X, Whatever Games His Friends Are Playing, and a Decent Headset like a HyperX CloudX

I’m plenty satisfied with my regular One. It’s the day one edition and works fantastic. As much memory as these new games are using you’ll want to get the biggest hard drive available or get an external hard drive. Or he’ll have to delete games to install others.
Then the games will probably be the typical for a 10-17 year old, call of duty and Minecraft. Neither interest me so not much help there.

My xbox kept me safe indoors, when all my friends were off getting ****ed up on pills or alcohol, crashing their cars, etc. I turned it into a source of income for a little bit. :)

OP I have seen a ton of Xbox systems for under $200, $500 GB I believe?

I just spent $550 for Nintendo Switch, 2 games and 1 controller for my kids.

Seems like a ton but then I remember the PS2 was $300 17 years ago, the PS3 was $600 and that was 11 years ago! Also, that was just the console with no games.

So $500 in today's time doesnt seem as much.

especially for what you get nowadays, the games are insane. Did you get them Mario? Those games literally have hundreds of hours of gameplay in them.

Mario was a must, Mario Kart and Mario Odyssey. My son is going to be 4 but my daughter is 10 and both usually play the PS4 so got them something more kid friendly.

Go to Gamestop and get a used Xbox1 with a warranty, there's nothing crazy about XB1 and the all the new system updates other then 4K which I still can't or could care about. I'm almost ready to ditch mine because it's nothing more then a big media center. I'll sell you mine if interested.

At least get the One S. It's smaller, doesn't have a power brick, does 4K media output (not games) and 4K BluRay, HDR, and has a controller that can be paired with PC's.

The One X is the most powerful unit. It games in 4K (the One S only upscales games to 4K) and loads a little faster. That's about the only difference between that and the S.

Get the Xbox S. I believe there is a holiday bundle right now with Forza Horizon 3 and the Hot Wheels pack. ($200 at Wal Mart) You will probably end up playing it more than him. Keep an eye on slickdeals.net. Xbox gold (live) one year digital codes go on sale quite a lot for around $35-$40. Especially this time of year. The gold sub is worth it since you get usually 2-3 games free a month. I have over a hundred games that I haven't even played, but they were free. And make sure you follow the advice above. Hook it up now and download everything. The servers will get hammered Chrismas morning. Best Buy also had a 4 tb external drive for around $85 earlier in the week. Install all your games on the external. Games load way faster than on the internal. Plus the 500 gig is really only 380. 5 games and your probably filled up. One more thing with the xbox. If you ever plan on getting a second unit, buy all your games digital. You can set one xbox as your home xbox, then remote log in to the second. This way you can share your games. I do that with my son. His xbox is set as my primary xbox. I buy the games on my account, he plays on my home xbox, then I log in to the second xbox. That way we can play online games together while only needed to by one copy.
