I am looking to buy my first 1911. I have a few I am looking at such as the S&W E-Series, Ruger SR1911, or Springfield 1911. Like I said, I am new to the 1911 world, so I don't know much about them. It would be an everyday carry pistol, lots of use. Not looking to spend more than $800, so nothing custom.

I own an SR1911 Ruger in Stainless.

Love it. Great gun. Well made. The only thing that drives me crazy is the trigger in mine was loose out of the gate. But I bought this thing almost 6 years ago.

Be aware they sell the commander 5" series and the regular 4.5". I have the Commander and while i'm not small, i'm not 6'5 250lbs. So the gun is big on most normal size guys. But that being said, in the fall/winter with my soft holster I can keep it under a jacket and it's not overly obvious.

A 1911 is a huge gun and probably not easy for EDC. Are you concealing it or do you have open carry where you are?

If you want a 1911 style concealed, check out the Sig Sauer P238/P938. They are micro-compacts and pretty awesome. Also, well under your $800 budget.

I have a Kimber Custom II that I bought once the Obama got elected (I assumed semi auto pistols were in trouble).

I really love the gun but 1911's are bulky, making them not very good CC guns. Because of this I rarely carry unless doing a cash transaction or the gun will find itself in the console on long road trips.

My suggestion is make sure you get a gun with decent sights. I think the base Springfield 1911 has crappy sights and the only way to really upgrade them is to have a gun smith machine the front slide for a dovetail.

1911 is not for everybody as an edc, although i have a couple of friends who carry them concealed daily.

It's a forty ounce gun. I'm 6'3" 215lbs, and have carried mine a few times, but better to have a small gun with you always, than a large one with you sometimes.

If I am not in bed or in the shower I have a small single stack striker fired on my belt, that's 15oz instead of 40.

There isn't any 1911 that is even close to $800 that id trust my life with.

Get something else or save A LOT more money.
I'd carry my Colt Gubmint or Springfield Range Officer at that price point in a heartbeat if 1911's weren't such boat anchors to lug around.

not at my post...
I love my 1911, but would never carry, round count, weight and it has been a picky eater in the past. While I have sorted it and it's been reliable lately, that ain't good enough when your life depends on it. My XD on the other hand has never had a hiccup.

As others have said, 1911's aren't always the best everyday carry gun. If you're set on one though, check out Rock Island Armory. I have their 1911 compact and it's been a wonderful gun. Even if you want to add Wilson Combat trigger, hammer, sear and sear spring, you would still be under $800.

I have a Kimber Ultra CDP in a 45. I love the gun but I would look elsewhere for a good concealed carry gun. I would recommend looking at quality holsters that will hold a gun how you want. Then I would sort through what guns the holster fits. I would recommend a Glock 9 mm that feels good in your hand.

If you already have a conceal carry gun and just want a 1911, get the most expensive single stack with 5 inch barrel you can afford.

Don't forget that the right belt (along with the right holster) will make all the difference in the world distributing the weight.

Jason Flemming (chiefjason) in Hickory NC makes all my leather holsters, and Curt Gillock (Fatboy Belts by Two Fools Leather in Monroe NC) makes the only belts I wear now.

I have a Springfield 1911 Mil Spec as my EDC, and agreed it is a bear to carry everyday, Im going to go Glock.

However, if I run out of bullets, I can sling the handgun at em, it'll do the same amount of damage as the .45 will xD

I have a p938. It is a great carry gun, but not real fun too shoot. I take it to the range to shoot just so I can be competent with it, but I never run more the 3-4 mags through it.

Don't listen to everybody, 1911's are easy to carry, you just need the right gear. I carry an aluminum commander or a stainless 5" every day. You need a good holster and a belt and you will forget you even have one on. I also carry an extra magazine to get around the small round issue.

I recommend a Milt Sparks Nexus or Versa Max holster and a belt with a stiffener added. I wear one of Al Childress' hand made leather belts. He's made dress belts for me too. I'll never wear a store bought belt for carry or otherwise ever again. The belt will make the biggest difference in something that is easy to carry or not.

There are two 1911's worth buying (i.e. that are any good). Colt and Springfield. I hear Ruger makes a good one too. Whatever you do....do not buy a Kimber. They are well known for their problems. Also avoid anything with an external extractor.

Good luck.

I get that it takes some effort to shoot, but, I do not think it is too bad.

I enjoyed pumping 50 rounds through it and didn't feel like it took too much effort or out of me to do so.

I paid $675 plus tax for a brand new one locally.

Gunprodeals, Targetsportsusa, etc.

https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/category.cfm/sportsman/firearms/brand/SIG-SAUER/of3/9-MM

Also, check out gunbroker too. Can be had new for less than $650 plus a small shipping fee.

There is also a deal with sig now, where you get two mags and a bag if you buy a specific firearm, some exclusions.
