What ammo do you guys use for shotgun home defense only.

I agree with above posters who say it depends...barrel length, layout, distance, vision..I have always used #4 Buck 2 & 3/4 as I can handle the load and Mossy would allow one more in chamber. It was the issued round during my police days. Alternating 6 shot with #4 is a good option for home use only. As for the number 4 buck, I was present when two armed robbers were taken out with one shot...the shot hit both of them mid-upper thigh...at ~ 35 ft

I would prefer short barrel shotgun- Saiga with 12 inch barrel for home defense...and 10+ round clip.

A shotgun really seems silly to me for home defense. Doesn't seem like the best option for defense in a home invasion, compared to a pistol more easily concealed and easier to get to.

But, this isn't something that ever even enters my mind as I could throw a baseball and hit the police department's building.

A shotgun is widely considered the best choice for home defense.

More on topic, I keep 00 Buck in my Wilson Scattergun for all of the reasons mentioned here.

I'm sorry to disagree, but this isn't accurate. 4OO buck and slugs are a very common round in L.E. some alternate one, then the other while others leave it full of buck and have slugs on a side saddle. You aren't going to try and take a hostage shot with a shotgun at anytime. That's why you transition to a pistol. The thread is about what the best load in a shotgun for home defense which, IMO, is OO buck. In panic mode as long as you're close, you're gonna do damage to an intruder. Most people aren't accurate when under stress, but with minimal spread, your not going to hit anyone beside you.
Slugs are devastating, but require greater accuracy and will over penetrate just about everything in a house. You don't want to miss and send a slug across the street and into a neighbor's house.

You disagree but agree? I said LE use Slugs and some departments around me only use slugs and there are people that have been killed or injured from a shotguns buckshot but to each their own.

No bro, I disagreed. There have been people killed by buckshot, you are correct. I think you're specifically speaking of collateral casualties to which I say there are officer involved shootings with pistols where innocents are struck too. It isn't an ammo issue, it's a training issue. There are only two types of rounds approved for carry in most agencies, OO buck and slugs. Coincidentally they are the same rounds you qualify with to carry said shotgun.

first 2 is 2 3/4th 00 buck and a 1 1/4th ounce slug behind out of a Remington 1187 Police magnum. 12 gauge.

And if I lived in the country to hell with dogs as I would probably have about a dozen Guineas, they only do a ruckus when something is out there, unlike a dog that barks just to be barking on most occasions.

Our Guineas never went off at night when they roosted . Old Blue however, sounded off at anything that didn't belong. He now patrols freely at night, and loves it!

I've have heard some say to have both slug and buck loaded and so you can discharge to what round you need depending on the situation. I feel like it could be tough to do in the Moment though.

I don't have a lot of exp. with Shotgun. Only shot mine a couple of times to get a feel for it, couple of boxes maybe, but with a slug wouldn't it be easier to control put it where you want it so to speak ?

I have this fear that say if someone grabbed my kid, or an animal attacked or something crazy and I have my shotgun in hand, but I can't or I'm scared to shoot because of hitting my kid with shot too...

The spread on OO buck isn't like bird shot. It doesn't spread all that much. You can center mass a silhouette target at 20 yards and keep it in the middle lethal areas. Most home encounters won't be near that far unless you're tracking him as he runs down the driveway.

Run at them as fast as you can, put the barrel against thier body or head and take a contact shot. Can be done quickly. If you aren't sure of the shot, put yourself in a better position.

Buckshot has more of a spread, it's more of the oh @$&@&$ moment and then once on target a slug is as accurate as a rifle. Basically if someone was holding a knife to someone's throat the slug would take the bad guy out and you would need dental records to identify them. The problem with bird and buckshot which many police departments are getting away from is there are pellets going off target and they are going to slugs only.

My scenario of using a shotgun for home defense does not include a hostage situation. It's purely the oh @$&@&$ you mentioned as someone has busted in the middle of the night. That's why I load 7 rounds of #00 Buck. 99% of the population is not going posses the necessary marksmanship to utilize the slug's potential in a break-in situation.

Bird shot. If someone is committed it may not stop them, immediately at least. The human body is very easy to incapacitate(PC word), but it's difficult to incapacitate quickly.

If the first one don't the second one will.... being hit by a shot gun usually always stops whoever your firing at... it's a big hit usually over a big area.. I know if I'm hit with one the plan will be over lol

Don’t fight over ammo. I just asked a question and I value all the opinions given.
LOL, its a defensive ammo thread, they always turn into a shit show.

If your goal is to have the person that you shoot not get up, 00 Buck creates a wound channel that is lethal.

I’d like to get some opinions from the knowledgeable people here. I get so much conflicting info on this topic it makes me spin. From bird to buck to slugs. Let’s see what you use.
I have a mossberg pump action.
If your going to go out and buy rounds for your gun I would agree buckshot is probably the best. If you have adjustable chokes/changeable barrel put in the full choke for the tightest shot spread. I have a Remington 1100 that I keep the slug barrel on for home defense. I bird hunt and always have loose shells around,so I keep it loaded with bird shot. With the semiauto, slug barrel and 15-20' shots inside my house,I'm confident I'll put down anyone stupid enough not to run when they hear me chamber the first round.

1st round Bea, she's very possessive of her cars and trucks. The 870 with extended mag gets some buckshot followed by sabot slugs as I don't know if there is more trying to come in out here in the country
