So i want to update my sct x4 device.. but i get this ominous message to return my car to stock.. i have saved the stock tune file on my pc.. i dont really see a reason to return the car to stock before upgrading the device... wouldnt the procedure be : upgrade device, load stock tune, load costume tune.. the sct x4 seems to have a different memory space for your stock tune as opposed to the custom tune.. am i missing something???

Why do you even care to update it if your already custom tuned? It will literally change nothing and if you care so much still.... probably should just return the car to stock temporarily and update it like it says so you don't cause any issues, seems pretty simple. Id imagine they are just covering themselves but why risk it as im sure someones unit has bricked up along the way, hence the warning.

If the car isn't driveable with out a custom tune then I'd leave the custom tune on it when updating. Sometimes your Xcal will brick when doing an update and you have to send it into SCT to get repaired. If your car isn't driveable with the stock tune then your stuck until you get the Xcal back from them.

I agree there really isn't any reason to update your Xcal unless you need to as you're just inviting problems. Back when I had SCT I never updated my Xcal 3. The only time I did an update was when SCT had an update that allowed the Xcal 3 to hold 10 tunes instead of 3. Naturally my Xcal 3 locked up after the update and had to be worked on by SCT.

The SCT device likes to save the stock tune to the actual handheld. I know that you have the stock tune on your PC, but the device was never programmed to realize that people might do that.

When you do the device update, that stock tune will be completely erased. It wants you to return your vehicle to stock, obviously you won't turn it on, so that after the update, it can re-get the stock tune, and then you can write the custom tune to your car after that.
