We need a new mattress too, been thinking of trying the purple or casper because it is impossible to get my wife to a mattress store. It has a 100 day free trial but I don't know how good the mattresses are.

The misses and I are starting the elongated process of shopping for mattresses. I have been fighting a back injury for the last 8 years and majority of that lies in my lower back. Additionally, when I get muscle tightness in my back it's worse between my shoulder blades.

I see a chiropractor regularly and they recommended a Saavta Mattress which is an online company that delivers directly to my door. We can get into the Saavta for $2,498 with a split mattress (firmness split for my wife and I) and an adjustable frame. The Chiro has changed over all of the mattresses in their homes to this one and haven't looked back.

Of course I'm also willing to consider other makers as long as it's not a memory foam mattress. Obviously, Tempur-Pedic has come up in conversation but we are yet to lay or go look at one. I'm looking for recommendations from those who have recently went through this process and what you ended up buying. Thanks in advance.

I have had my Tempur Pedic for probably close to 13-14 years and still love it. It's a great mattress! I tried many different models but in the end I liked the basic model the best. It's not like you just sink down into the mattress. It is firm yet comfortably soft. If you haven't tried one I recommend at least going to a store that carries Tempur Pedic and giving it a try. I'm getting ready to buy a larger mattress soon and I'm pretty sure it will be another Tempur Pedic.

I think there is a misconception that you do "sink" and "cradle". Tempurpedic memory foam mattresses use multiple layers with different purposes. Many other foam mattresses are not as well engineered, both in the quality of the foam and the construction of the mattress. I'm not saying Tempurpedic is the only working memory foam mattress, but they do engineer them well. In my experience they felt much different than other mattresses I tried.

OP, if you decide on a sleep number, temperpedic, or other bed like those see if you can have your sales tax waived if you get a prescription for the bed.
Not sure if it varies by state, but Texas waives all sales tax if you have a prescription for your bed.

Whatever you do, please do NOT buy a Serta!!!! We got a $2k set a couple years ago and it was the worst decision ever. The memory foam pillow top sank on us, 140lb me has a crater in my bed and because it's less than 2 inches deep they will not return it per their 10 year warranty. We exchanged/traded down using their 120 day trial to get a non pillow top, firm mattress which we thought would solve our problem. Nope. Same exact problem. Oh, and we didn't get a refund for trading down. I look forward to staying in hotels!

For comparison, while in college I owned the $500 big lots memory foam mattress. No springs, all foam. That thing lasted me a good solid 3 years until I started to have issues. I made 5 years with it until my new dog tore it up. In hind sight, knowing what I know now, I wish I would have just bought a big lots one again and planned on getting a new mattress every few years.

Been following this thread for a bit as I have been looking and in need of a new mattress. My 7yr old basic 500$ pillowtop has dips and divits in it and is starting to pain me and my girl.

Went to sleepoutfitters to try some different stuff out, first thing he puts us on is the top of the line postur-pedic. It was nice and firm what we need felt good. Tried the next line down postur-pedic and it was a little softer and we decided we liked the firmer one more.

Tried two different Stearns and foster those were both nice..... one much softer then the other and still decided we liked the firmer one.

Then tried the top of the line Sealy conform premium firm. Sales guy told us postur-pedic purchased Sealy a few years ago so they basically have the same technology in them but for a lot cheaper. The Sealy may not hold up as long as the tempur-pedic but it actually felt the best to us out of all the ones we tried.

So I told the guy right from the start we were just trying things today.... not looking to purchase and repeated it several times..... he kept pushing for the sale so finally I told him I work for JCP and can pretty much kill any price he can offer me.... I just wanted to sample things.... guy asks "well what the hell are you doing here then!?!?" Then disapears...... whole store was empty whole time we was there so not like he missed a huge sale or anything..... just didn't know when to take no for an answer. Absolutely can't stand sales people like that.

Anyways ordered the Sealy conform premium firm with box spring for 1400$ tax and shipped really looking forward to it and getting rid of my old POS.

I wish I could get the same mattress they use in the suites at the Hard Rock hotels. Most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on! Of course we checked the mattress for tags and there wasn't anything except a tag stating it was manufactured specific for Hard Rock... didn't even state what company made it. Hotel desk & housekeeping couldn't tell us the brand either.

Wife and I are also in the market for a new mattress. Ours is 17 years old! It was a Sealy pillow top

Spend some time on mattress underground and educate yourself on pros and cons of different types of mattresses. Then go to varying retailers and try some out that meet your criteria. Personally I went with a latex foam mattress and I love it.

My old Jewish boss once told me, you only spend good money on two things, shoes and mattresses. I had terrible back pain for years and was on opioids for quite some time to cope with it due to an ATV accident. I finally broke down and spent $6k on a king size Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe, and by the 3rd night, I had no more pain when waking up, and I fall asleep in about 3.5 seconds every night, and take no more meds for back pain. In addition, I buy a new shredded memory foam pillow from Costco every 3-4 months, and I sleep like a baby now. I also spent way too much money on a pair of Cole Haan dress shoes for work, and that has also helped immensely, so I guess my old boss had it figured out.

The saavta looks tempting. Especially since you get a 120 day trial.

Well. We have decided on the new Temper-Pedic Contour Elite Breeze. Thanks for everyone's help!

Great choice! FWIW, they are really good about warranty claims if you ever have any issues. Just make sure you follow their policy on the mattress cover, etc

Out of curiosity, how'd you go about deciding that was "the one?"

Good choice, I think you will enjoy it for years to come. I'm headed out this weekend to see if I can find a good deal on a new Tempur-Pedic this weekend myself.

I've been looking myself at getting a new mattress (needing to burn my current one because the ladies I've conquered in the past) lol, but what are most people sleep patterns, I tend to sleep on my stomach so what should I be looking for?

Literally visited every mattress store in our area. Then spent a lot of time laying on the mattresses for an extended period of time. It was the only mattress that realigned my back when laying on my side and back. Also splurged and got their adjustable frame which includes zero gravity, stop snoring button, head only, feet only and massage.

I actually ended up ordering it directly through TP due to 0% for 72 months and was free delivery plus $350 less than retail stores.
