Another navy ship collision, is the navy out of control?

I'm curious how they're hacking a closed loop system? Spies on board? It's especially interesting considering the system can go full manual

That's why I doubt hacking. Spoofing a GPS signal or manipulating radar signals on the other hand???

Does the Navy manually plot anymore, or do they solely rely on electronic navigation?

Depends. At sea, electronic. In an area like where this crash occurred, electronic with radar plot as a back up.
We keep up to date paper charts, but only use them if the vms system goes down.

Radar is tough to manipulate because we're using multiple radars. The gps is a real thing

Might be time to break out the paper charts and do some DRs in these congested areas.

(angry chief voice) It's time to push basic seamanship again and stop qualifying these ****ing boot ensigns just because they need to qualify. People would rather have shit watch standers and less watch than suck it up and make people earn the qualification. It's ****ing sad, and now 17 people are dead because of it. Sailors that didn't deserve to die. Junior sailors are under our care, and these asshats are ****ing it away.

I have a fiend that was in both the CG and Navy. According to him, the seamanship skills of the CG are lightyears ahead of the Navy.

To lightly touch on the politics of this unfortunate tragedy. My question would be: Did the last 8 years, help contribute to this.

100% that's their job. They aren't out getting to flex their muscles or shoot people.

Bingo. The Navy trains to fight, it seems that driving the damn boat properly is at best secondary concern for them.

The cuts to all military expenditures over the last 8 years. As here the standards dropping, and the retention levels. You would know, but comparing the pre and post O's fleet numbers. It didn't look good to me.

The officers who ship drive only do it for a few years before moving on, so the experience isn't there.

Um, no. It's really just a matter of experience at the position. An officer learns ship driving, but will move away from it to learn a tactical position.

Where you see the effects of the budget cuts is material readiness. Retention is decent. Most ratings are manned at or near 100%

I know nothing about this stuff but it seems to me that anything can be hacked or manipulated nowadays. Going back to basics seems like a viable option if you want to play it a safe way. I'm sure the electronics are much more effective though but if the new tech can be compromised....

Which this is something I've always wondered about since we live in the days of EMP's and all that fun stuff.

Based on the flooded spaces, and the names/rates listed I can almost guarantee where they are.

Apparently Commander 7th Fleet got bounced. Wonder if that is far as it will go.
Yes, Vice Admiral Aucoin was relieved of duties. I would suspect that'd be it. Other than some firings on the ship. The CNO directed a readiness review of all ships, and you may see some more random disciplines based on the findings, but thats about it.
