The take away from all of this is how surprisingly well the car puts up with sawing like that.

Dude is a good driver. Lots of speed and good lines.

A lot of it was probably made possible by how light the front end was, with that big wang in the back and since it is classified as a front mid engine. Engine sits behind the front tires.

Man I love vipers wish they would continue to make them. If you own an older viper I am sure you are happy. The value has gone up I am sure.
Surprisingly it has not yet...but it's still too soon.

Well, I just recovered from my seizure and I've got about 2.5 hours of work left wearing these wet shorts. Dammit!

I think Freud has something to say about that.

Anyway, crazy video to watch. I can't imagine doing a balls to the wall hot lap on the Ring. I can't barely focus long enough to complete a lap in Forza before my contacts dry out cause I haven't blinked in 5 minutes.

OMG. He hit the rev limiter several times. What a NOOOB.

They blew the 2nd and 3rd gear synchro on this run, which is why he is "hitting" the limiter, the car wasn't shifting well into 2nd and 3rd. With 50 shifts+ on each lap you can imagine how much time was lost here.

Additionally, a restart of the car before pit exit caused the trac/stability settings to come back online which he didn't realize until some time in. You can see him fumbling with the buttons trying to disengage it (you have to be stopped to turn it all FULL OFF).

Basically this 1 clean lap they got, was anything but clean. Dom made the most of it though, he is an absolute ****ing animal in that car (even though he hasn't set foot in one in over a year). How far this effort has come on the absolutely skeleton crew and private budget is unreal. This is the THE ONLY private funded ring attempt in the history of this track. Most OEMs have garages and full race teams ON TRACK and rent the track for days completely to themselves to put up 100s of practice laps and the hero pass. These guys are out there on industry days practicing with traffic, and had 1, ****ing 1 lap to make a pass. Their achievement is truly David and Goliath.

Production car sure seems loose in this case. Anywho when will someone break the overall record that Porsche has owned for 3 decades?

If I remember correctly they hold that record because the ring was shorter due to construction... which means that it will likely never be broken.

I'll bet his arms were happy when that run ended. That was quite a run. Gotta love these Vipers. But so brutal!

I'm wondering why he couldn't get over 278 kph (173 mph) on that last long straight. It was like he hit a wall. ??

High down force is the enemy of speed.

Yeah, someone else pointed out the negative affect of the downforce, too. I definitely understand it is the enemy of speed (now). :)

Stefan Bellof ran the same 12.9 mile course that is run today. In 1983 because of construction the track was shortened from 14.2 miles to 12.9. He did it in a car with 2.6 liters and no differential. The car had a spool so it naturally wanted to always go straight. Obviously it could turn just fine. That car today, just with current tires would easily knock off another five seconds. Best part is the Porsche conspiracy theorists cant claim Porsche is a liar.

You're absolutely correct. To knock off 13+ seconds is being way too optimistic though.

Maybe, but they did knock off 10 seconds back in 2010? Went from 7:22 to 7:12. My prediction from the very beginning was 6:55. Factory effort would result in a 6:48. It's too bad the factory couldn't get involved.

Wouldn't*

But I don't blame them. Why spend a ton of money on a car they stopped production on.
