I know MGW is the best but mine has not loosened up enough for me, what is the next best one that is not quite as tight and has a good position for reach-----Steeda? Hurst? or other? Yes the mgw has tight positive shifting and well made but it is just too tight and notchy for my taste.

I really like my Steeda shifter... but it was notchy like yours and made a lot of gear noise when I first installed it. I made a gasket to insulate it from the transmission, and also found out that the stops were adjusted incorrectly (bought the shifter used).

The shifter shouldn't be in contact with the stops while the car is in gear. It should be very close to them but not touching. If it is resting on the stop, there is a good chance your transmission isn't fully engaging.

I'd try adjusting the stops first and see if that helps. It was really easy on mine and it made a huge difference in the feel and noise level. I was questioning my shifter decision but it's great now that it's adjusted correctly.

If the MGW isn't smooth enough for you I think you're only choice is to go back to stock.

How many miles do you have with the MGW installed?

I liked my Steeda TriAx, but quite honestly, if you want smooth you're looking at going back to the factory shifter. You might try a transmission fluid switch to see if it makes enough of a difference for you. What fluid are you now using?

Maybe smooth is the wrong word to use--------I dont want it as stiff as the mgw but not sloppy like the factory one. Is the Steeda a little less stiff than the mgw?

I've ran pro5.0, steeda and mgw. I prefer steeda. Didn't like the high spring rate of the mgw and it's been so long now I can't really remember the pro5.0

Are you talking about smoothness/stiffness or notchy-ness? If it feels stiff, try a different fluid. If it is notchy, the Pro50 or TriAx will feel similar. It's the nature of the beast. The factory shifter is going to feel the smoothest and least notchy, at the great expense of longer shifter travel. And the overall feel will be on the sloppy side. Trust me, the fluid you use makes a difference. There are numerous threads here on this subject.

To remove stiffness you may want to talk to MGW about reducing the spring pressure. I don't recall if that model of shifter has internal springs, but if it does there may be some adjustment there.

As for notchiness, that is a function of a shorter throw. The only way to reduce that feel is to increase the shift throw. MGW may be able to help you there with a longer handle.

I have the long handle mgw already, its not so much the notchiness its just that stiff-tight over sprung feeling I dont like. As far as oil goes, I have the factory oil in it but Im thinking about switching to the GM syncromesh oil.

Ok, after searching other sites and opinions. The Pro5 wins in the smoothness category especially in the 2 to 3 gear shift. Many go with the Pro5 and the Steeda handle. So this is what Im going to go with. Ill report in after the switch.
